Sadly, this was bound to happen somewhere...this kid is a local. Carolina and Bama fans trashtalking after the game and it obviously escalated. Kid was pushed and fell headfirst in front of the tire.

That is terrible news.

Not nearly as tragic, but along the same lines: Co-worker had to leave early today to take her 20-something son to a surgeon because he got punched during the FSU/UM game Saturday night that fratured his jaw in 3 places.

Story is that he and the people around him got unintentionally caught up in a fight between some drunk fans in the row behind them, and the punch was not actually aimed at him. His chin just got in the way.

I never understood physically fighting someone over a team or a game.

I have many vivid memories of when OSU pounded Michigan in 1968. Among them ...

I was sitting on the rise near what is now the Wexner Center watching the students party. High St was packed with people. Every now and then an empty bottle would go flying - just thrown in the air in celebration.

After a bit I saw a car trying to turn left off of 15th. '57 Chevy with Michigan plates. Fans were hollering at him, pounding on the sides, even rocking the car. Then the driver panicked and hit the gas.

Folks tried to scatter, but you could see the car going up and down like it was going over bumps. There were no bumps on High St.

I caught up with him near 11th. Some students were jumping up and down trying to collapse the roof while others were trying to set the car on fire. I have no idea where the driver was at that point.

Never saw the incident mentioned in the media.

So you're saying fan behavior hasn't actually gotten much worse on the whole, reporting of it has just gotten better. Doesn't make it ok then or now, but an interesting story for people like me in their 20s that have been led to believe "bad fans" are something that started in the late 90's. Today something like that would be on YouTube within 5 minutes, and suspensions/expulsions would follow within the week. These days not only is someone always watching, more often than not they're also recording.

That reminds me of the UD ghetto after the NCAA tournament run in 84....except it was a Dayton PD car.

I remember High Street in 1979 after the late blocked punt that beat Michigan and sent the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl (God damn Charles White to hell forever) as the #1 team in the nation.

Police came out in full riot gear. If you tried to cross the street for a while you got arrested. It was bedlam. At one point the crowd starting chanting "Fuck Iran" (this was during the hostage crisis) and most cops that I saw couldn't help but break out grinning. One of the wildest nights of my young life. Fortunately, it wasn't spent in jail.

Exactly. I honestly get fired up and quite angry while sober and someone is talking trash about the Buckeyes...

It isn't just that kind of stuff. You'll have some drunk dude stumble in to your wife and spill [censored] on her. You can think of a lot of reasons why you might have strong words with someone--sometimes that results in someone getting hit in the face. But as a whole it is stupid. When someone gets their testicles ripped out (link) or killed because of a sporting event things have gone too far.

Sadly funny...

Police: Penn State fan wearing blue and yellow Halloween costume mistaken for Michigan fan, assaulted

November 1, 2010 2:17pm EDT

A Penn State fan dressed in a blue and yellow Halloween costume sustained a possible broken nose Saturday at 9:25 p.m. after he was assaulted by four unknown Penn State fans at Beaver Stadium, police said.
The men attacked, police said, because they thought the victim was a University of Michigan fan.
The victim was treated and released from Mount Nittany

The used to have aisle seats (4C) beside the visitor's section (6C) in "the shoe". I can unequivocally say that the Penn State fans are the worst. Look up rude, obnoxious, and/or no class in the dictionary and you'll probably see a picture of some Penn State fans.
