QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

I sure hope to Hell Haskins wins. Egg for everyone’s faces. It is sad, really, for Dwayne. He has to feel like the step child of the group and it’s totally undeserved. It’s down right shameful of all the parties involved with this award.

One stat that's very meaningful, but which ESPN ignores, is passing efficiency. Murray and Tua are both ahead of the record of 198.9 that Mayfield set last year.

205.7 - Murray
202.3 - Tagovailoa
175.8 - Haskins (same as Jake Fromm)

ESPN's announcers are not allowed to talk about passing efficiency ratings, which have been used for decades to evaluate QBs. They have to talk about QBR instead, which is a thing made up by ESPN several years ago. I've heard Todd McShay say on the air "I'm not allowed to talk about that other" statistic. I will never trust QBR, since they invented it and have their reasons for using it instead of passing efficiency.

But the difference in the efficiency rating, largely due to yards-per-attempt, is why I won't be very ticked off if Murray wins the Heisman tonight. I'll be ticked if Tua wins, since the margin will almost certainly be caused by the 10% of idiots who voted before last Saturday, of which I'm sure 90% voted for Tua.

Murray should win in my opinion.

Haskins 2nd

very good QB on the #1 team should be 3rd

The big problem with the imbalance in stats is that all of the counting stats benefit Haskins because the run game and defense dictated he had to pass for four quarters. Detractors argue this disqualifies Haskins for the same reasons it has disqualified QBs from Oklahoma St, Texas Tech, or Hawaii for at least fifteen years. Supporters will say Alabama still wins 12 games and goes to the playoff with Hurts, Oklahoma would still do the same considering Mayfield won the Heisman in the same offense last year, but Ohio State is probably an 8-4 team without Dwayne.

I recognize both sides of this argument. Let's look through the history of BP and see how many of us pounded the table for Graham Harrell or Colt Brennan or whoever else. The answer is probably zero. If I'm being honest with myself and I didn't think anyone of them ever deserved it, I've got to reevaluate every reason why I think "my guy" does deserve it. There are three things Haskins has over any of those predecessors: A ridiculous TD:INT ratio, a prototype NFL body, and an Ohio State jersey.

OK, there's another difference: Haskins is in the Big Ten doing this against Big Ten defenses, including the #1 defense in the country in a rivalry game. But was that on it's own enough? Were the games against Maryland, Michigan, and Northwestern enough?

The reason for the gulf between ypa and rating has to be system, right? I knew that Murray's was higher, but after watching them both quite a bit it's hard to see a 30 point difference.

But anyway I agree. I'm fine with Murray winning as he's had a great season and is better than Baker was. Tua got exposed against Georgia as far as I'm concerned.

You have to give both Murray and Tua credit, though. When interviewed, both of them emphasized that Dwayne is a part of their group, too.
