I loved this from Buckeye Commentary about using Wells more with the Toss Sweep. The writer listed all the plays he would like to see more of in 2008. Each of these plays could involve Beanie more!

Link: Wednesday's List: Plays I Want to See in 2008 | Football |

Summary:

1. Screen Pass

2. Toss Sweep: Eddie George turned this play into an art form and Wells' skill set is remarkably similar to George's with his deceptive speed for a big guy. The Buckeyes started running this play more last year and I loved it every time. Beanie is a powerful inside runner but allowing him to get up to get a head of steam before encountering defenders makes him even more dangerous. His stiff arm allows him to break early tackles and hit full speed in the open field. We will certainly see it in 2008 but I can stand to see it have a larger role.

3. Rollout Pass

4. Direct Snap to Beanie

5. Wild Buck (aka Arkansas' Wild Hog)

#4 & #5, please, NO!

Inside trap plays...YES!

Beanie is a sledge hammer ala Jim Brown, yes he can run the toss play. Lets save the spread for Saine Henton Pryor. With our D giving Beanie 20 to 30 carries could be a winning strategy. Being a Woodie era grad..interceptions are one of the biggest momentum changing plays in a game. See Illinois etc. This offense is not the TS, TG, and AG offense. Our no.1 stength is Beanie and the OL, our receivers are fine and our QB is ok. Wells and Boone will be all americans..use them early late and often! Go Bucks

It cracks me up how people think he's just a power back. He is at least as fast as Mendenhall and Stewart and they did just fine in spread offenses.

Just to clarify, this isn't in response to your comment, Onebuckfan. Just all these writers have said Beanie and Pryor couldn't play in the spread together because they think Beanie isn't fast enough.

Thank you OB couldn't agree more. Beanie is the most versatile back in the country.

You might want to take the scarlet glasses off for a bit on that one. Beanie only has 7 catches for 37 yards in his career.

Best running back in the country? Arguably yes. Most versatile... not so much.

Best combination of size and speed (which is what you might be trying to get at): without a doubt.

Beanie has some pretty good hands. Remember that sick one-handed catch against Iowa in '06? I think he is a versatile back even if Tressel doesn't use him that way.

That may be, but in the court of non-Buckeye opinion, I don't think that seven catches, regardless of how fantastic they may have been, will make people think that he is versatile out of the backfield.

I'm not saying that Beanie doesn't have good (or even fantastic) hands, but you can't call a running back the most versatile in the country based on what he may be able to accomplish but hasn't.

This of course is all in the spirit of being objective, and considering this is a Buckeye board objectiveness isn't exactly at a premium.

I personally will stick with calling Beanie the best damn running back in the land and leave it at that. :)

I was trying to express the combo of size and speed but I will say this. When Beanie was being recruited all I ever heard was that he was just like Clarrett only he could catch the ball. If a player has an ability it matters very little whether or not his coach uses it to me. Troy hardly ever ran in 06 I but I wouldn't have called him an immobile quarterback. Versatility is what you can do not what your asked to do.

Rivals (Free)

4/29

Olin Buchanan's Top 10 Heisman Candidates for 2008. Beanie is #1.

I would have to agree with Beanie Wells being #1 and Tebow #2. I think Tebow can definitely win it, but due to the fact he already has one and only one guy (I'm sure you know who) has won two, Beanie should be the front runner this year.

But having said that it's anyones to win. Should be a fun race this season.

Had Wells gotten ten more carries against LSU, which would have taken him over the 222 yd performance against Michigan, I think he would have pretty much locked up the Heisman right there.

Are you trying to imply that a performance that took place last season would "lock up" the Heisman for the following season? I really hope not.

I didn't see any type of sarcasm font, and if there is a joke about this that I am unaware of, then I apologize. Otherwise... uhh, what?

The hype surrounding a player and teams most certainly carries over from year to year. I dont think a stronger performance would have locked it up, but it keeps the players/teams at the forefront of writers/pundits minds.
