COLUMBUS ? For a kid from Warren, backyard dreams don't get any closer to coming true than what Daniel "Boom" Herron accomplished Saturday against rival Michigan.

Herron rushed for 175 yards on 22 carries to put him over 1,000 yards for the season and 2,000 yards for his career. His 89-yard run in the third quarter tied a 68-year old OSU record held by Gene Fekete for the longest play from scrimmage in school history.

And maybe most importantly of all, the fourth-year junior has never lost to the rival from the state up north.

Boom! ? indeed ? against the Wolverines.

"It's a dream come true," Herron said. "Michigan is a great team, and it is a traditional rivalry type of game. It's always good to have a good game against a traditional rival like that."
The Warren Harding graduate has rushed for 1,068 yards on the season, a mark he feels very fortunate getting to at a program like Ohio State.

"Getting 1,000 yards was definitely a goal of mine, and always beating Michigan is another goal," Herron said. "Going out and getting a win in the bowl game is another one, so there are still some goals left out there to get. I couldn't do any of this without my teammates. Those guys have really stepped up. They are all great."

Herron came into the game against Michigan ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 100.1 yards rushing per game. He narrowly missed his career high of 190 yards set in the win over Penn State.

With his big game against the Wolverines, Herron has also moved into the Buckeyes' top 20 all-time rushers, just one more milestone a kid from Northeast Ohio can only dream about as a kid.

"The dream is to come to Ohio State, to play in front of 100,000 people and to beat Michigan," Herron said. "To get these records is just a plus."

I am so happy for him. He runs the ball the way it's supposed to be done and without the physical attributes of many backs that run like sissies compared to him. Great for Boom to be recognized by the coaches. Fcuk the media.

In 12 games this year, Daniel Herron rose from being almost the forgotten man in a loaded Ohio State running back stable to a player fans won't soon forget.

The highlighter pen emphasized the two exclamation points: The junior's 89-yard run in the third quarter against Michigan a week ago matched the longest run from scrimmage ever by a Buckeye, tying the sprint Gene Fekete had against Pittsburgh in 1942. Herron's 175 yards against the Wolverines boosted him to 1,068 for the season, making it the 20th time an OSU back topped 1,000. Archie Griffin did it three times, and Eddie George, Keith Byars, Chris "Beanie" Wells, Tim Spencer and Antonio Pittman did it twice.

"This is a dream come true," Herron said. "There's not that many people who even get the opportunity to play for Ohio State. It's a dream for me to be able to go out there and play in front of 100,000.

"Just to put something in the record book is even more of a plus. I am very thankful for it."

Coach Jim Tressel and his staff seemed reluctant at first to put the running game in Herron's hands. Though Herron and senior Brandon Saine were listed as co-starters at the beginning of the season, the coaches appeared intent on letting quarterback Terrelle Pryor handle much of the running and making Saine the featured back in a wide-open offense because of his pass-catching ability. Fans and media members also wanted to see more of Jordan Hall and Jaamal Berry, who flashed big-play potential.

But when the Buckeyes watched Pryor limp off with a leg injury at Illinois in the Big Ten opener, the coaches turned to the 5-foot-10, 202-pound Herron to save the day, and to the offensive line and fullback Zach Boren to clear the way. It was the same in an ill-fated comeback attempt at Wisconsin, OSU's only loss of the season, and then pretty much right on down the line.

"I am very grateful that it was me, that coach Tressel gave me the opportunity to carry the load," Herron said.
