Tressel said today that he, "feels good about Rod, he's working real hard and is on top of the task." The hope is that he completes his work before OSU opens fall camp on August 5.

Tressel said Smith has not missed much by not taking part in informal summer workouts that began in June, but that missing the start of fall camp would be hard to overcome.

"If he's going to contribute (this year), we need to have him from day one," Tressel said.

As Buckeyes report; Smith to arrive shortly
By TIM MAY

Freshman running back Roderick Smith didn?t check in with the rest of the Ohio State football team today, but he should be there in the next day or so.

He said by telephone moments ago that in summer school back in his hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind., he gained the grade improvement in two core courses needed to meet the enrollment requirements. He said he expected to travel to Columbus either later today or early tomorrow to join the Buckeyes in preseason camp, which convened at 1 p.m. today.

?I?m just happy I can come down there now,? said Smith, who wasn?t able to join the rest of the members of the freshman class on campus in late June for summer conditioning work at OSU. ?I?m ready to get down there and put in some work with the team.?
