RB T.C. Caffey (Official Thread)

But was that big miss only by MAC level schools? I'm trying to be Debbie Downer, more like a Realistic Rita, and is he actually good enough to be a Buckeye level RB in B1G play, or a nice story and play made against a MAC team? Not questioning his talent, I'm just asking from an honest admission of ignorance

I’m not necessarily attempting to make that fine of an assessment. Only suggesting he could very well be a scholarship level athlete at many schools that apparently didn’t offer. While he may have still chosen the PWO route at tOSU is another issue as is his skills as a B1G back. Purely commenting on the likely miss by many schools that would have benefited from his presence on their sideline.

Sounds like another CJ Saunders and Xavier Johnson story :day:

CHIP TRAYANUM TO PLAY RUNNING BACK FOR OHIO STATE AFTER WALK-ON TC CAFFEY RULED OUT FOR THE YEAR WITH A “LONG-TERM ISSUE”

Months after Evan Pryor was lost for the season, Ohio State's running back depth took another hit when Ryan Day announced on Tuesday that TC Caffey would be out for the year.

Caffey, a freshman walk-on from Hubbard, Ohio, had been thrust into a role as the team's fourth tailback after Pryor suffered a season-ending knee injury in fall camp and received carries in Ohio State's matchups with Toledo and Michigan State.

Against the Rockets, Caffey took a carry 49 yards for a touchdown, which stands as the second-longest touchdown run this season for the Buckeyes behind Miyan Williams' 70-yard scoring run in the Rutgers game. Caffey added five more carries for nine yards in the Toledo contest and took four carries for nine yards against Michigan State.

Down Pryor and Caffey, Day said Tuesday that Chip Trayanum, who transferred to Ohio State to play linebacker but was a running back for two seasons at Arizona State, will remain at running back rather than linebacker for the rest of the year.

“We lost TC for the year, so he won't be available. It's a long-term issue,” Day said at a press conference in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. “He had been doing some good things for us, so we felt like we needed to provide some more depth at the position. Chip had really come to us a couple of weeks ago and said, ‘Hey, listen. If you need anything on offense. I'm here for you,’ which is the way he is. He's an unbelievable person and has a great attitude.”

WALK-ON TC CAFFEY SHOWING HE BELONGS IN OHIO STATE’S RUNNING BACK ROOM

Even though he wasn’t offered a scholarship by Ohio State, TC Caffey had his heart set on becoming a Buckeye.

A prolific runner at Hubbard High School, where he rushed for 2,638 yards and 37 touchdowns to earn first-team All-Ohio honors as a senior, Caffey had offers from several smaller Division I programs, including Army, Charlotte and Youngstown State. Offered an opportunity to join the
Buckeyes as a preferred walk-on, however, Caffey felt he couldn’t pass it up.

“It was a big dream for me,” Caffey said of playing for Ohio State. “I'm a competitive person. And I felt like this was the most competitive place to be. We got the most talented people in America playing this game here. And really just being able to come out here and compete with them every day, building myself as a man and as a football player.”

Hubbard coach Brian Hoffman said he and his assistant coaches told Caffey he should consider taking one of his scholarship offers, knowing he might have a clearer path to the field at one of those schools. But Hoffman never doubted that Caffey was capable of playing for Ohio State.

“I knew going to Ohio State as a walk-on could be an uphill battle, but I also when I talked to (former OSU running backs coach Tony Alford) when he was getting recruited, told him like, ‘This guy is gonna come in there and play for you. I believe that.’ He's the exception to the rule – his character, his work ethic, his dedication, I really believe he is going to help that football team,” Hoffman recalled.

Going into his third year as a Buckeye, Caffey is starting to prove Hoffman right.

While discussing Ohio State’s running backs after last weekend’s Student Appreciation Day practice, Day made a point of highlighting Caffey alongside the scholarship running backs as someone he expects to contribute to that unit this season.

“The other guy who’s been very, very good in there and I think is going to play for us and get carries for us is TC Caffey,” Day said. “He's done a very good job, he's very disciplined in his approach and he’s a guy that can really bring value for us.”

His best play to me is to keep working hard and get as many minutes as he can, finish his degree, and go into the portal as a grad transfer. I get, of course, wanting to be a Buckeye, but he's already that and you can't take away a degree. I imagine that he also wants to be a starter or major player with the time he's got and I don't see that happening here.
