LANCASTER-- A star Pickerington Central football player will undergo a competency test before a trial date can be set.

Roger Lewis Jr.'s attorney, Crysta Pennington, filed a motion of competency Thursday morning, postponing a trial date.

"I've become aware of some possible mental health issues, and I want to make sure (Roger) is competent and able to assist in his own defense," Pennington said.

Lewis, 18, was indicted on two counts of rape, both first-degree felonies, in March.

Fairfield County Prosecutor Gregg Marx said it will take between 30 to 60 days for the results to return. A trail date will be set after the results return.

Trial Begins For Ex-Pickerington Football Star Accused Of Rape
Wednesday February 13, 2013

LANCASTER, Ohio - A judge heard opening arguments in a trial for a man who once committed to play football for Ohio State University.

Roger Lewis Jr., 18, is charged with two counts of rape in connection with two alleged encounters with an 18-year-old woman, one in December 2011 and another in January 2012.

Much of the testimony on Wednesday revolved around the clash of cultures between Lewis, an African Americans and the alleged victim, who is Asian American.

?The victim said she was very concerned about going home and facing her parents,? said Dan Smith, the former assistant principal of Pickerington Central High School. ?The mom?s reaction, she dropped to the ground in a fetal position, crying very loudly, uncontrollably.?

Jury finds former Pickerington football star not guilty of one count of rape
Panel deadlocked on second count, resulting in mistrial
By Mary Beth Lane
The Columbus DispatchThursday February 21, 2013

LANCASTER, Ohio ? Jurors this afternoon acquitted a former Pickerington Central High School football player of one rape charge, but were deadlocked on a second, resulting in a mistrial.

Roger L. Lewis Jr. was charged with raping a classmate during their senior year.

His mother, Tina Thomas, shouted, ?Yes! Yes!? in the courtroom as the verdicts were read shortly before 6 p.m.. Then she began to sob.

Lewis thanked the jury.

Fairfield County Prosecutor Gregg Marx did not rule out retrying Lewis on the one rape count on which the jury reached an impasse. Common Pleas Judge Richard E. Berens declared a mistrial on that charge because of the deadlock.

Lewis could have faced a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison per count if he had been convicted of the first-degree felony.

His family declined comment afterward on the advice of lawyer Neil Rosenberg, who noted that there was the chance of a retrial.

The jury foreman told Berens at 12:30 p.m. today that although jurors had agreed unanimously on one verdict, they were at an impasse on the other count. The foreman said that even with more time, they were not going to reach an agreement.

Later, a juror emerged in tears and went into Berens? office for a private conversation.

The judge then directed the jury to do their duty, listen to one another and re-examine their positions in order to reach a unanimous verdict.

But after more than two full days of deliberations, nothing changed.

Roger L. Lewis Jr.
By Mary Beth Lane
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday September 3, 2013

  • LANCASTER, Ohio – A judge sentenced a former Pickerington Central High School football player to three years on probation this morning after he accepted a plea deal that averted a second rape trial.

Roger L. Lewis Jr., 19, said afterward that he is eager to get on with college and his football career, and plans to attend a Division I school at the start of next year. He said he has not ruled out Ohio State University. Ohio State is not recruiting Lewis, an OSU athletics spokesman said this afternoon.

Lewis was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to one count of falsification, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Fairfield County Common Pleas Court Judge Richard E. Berens sentenced Lewis to 180 days in jail, suspended for three years on probation.

The plea deal averted a re-trial that was scheduled this month on a rape charge. cont...

Unfortunately this young man will carry the stigma of being accused of rape before, which nowadays is sometimes as bad as being convicted of it. Something has to change in regards to how the accused gets their picture and name plastered everywhere by the media, effectively ruining their reputation, while the accusor for the most part escapes all media scrutiny, be the allegations true or false. With that said, I'm glad young Mr. Lewis is moving forward and getting a legit chance to fulfill his dreams.

The sad truth is that only two people in this world really know the truth. And that's the case with many sexual assault allegations.

It's the worst thing you can be accused of. It's generally one of the worst (if not the worst) things that someone can do to another human being (sexual assault). And it is absolutely that hardest to ever know the truth.
