Rugby (6N, Rugby Championship, IRB 7s, etc.)

I hoped you'd had the chance to go, Steve, and was thrilled that the Blitzbokke won at home this year.

I've come to the conclusion that USA won't get much better until after Rio. The media hype and mainstreaming of the sport should finally get some new blood into USA Rugby. Change won't come from inside the program.

South Africa is now on top of the world 7s rankings after winning the US stop of the IRB series. They're young and play well together... but their new jerseys are hideous. It could be tough for NZ to win it all this year. In a surprise, Canada took third place.

Belated and unsolicited rugby update:

USA beat Uruguay Saturday in a qualifier match for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in Kennesaw, GA. I was there and it was fcuking wet and cold. Great to play in that sort of weather, sucks to be a spectator. We were losing 13-3 at the half but blanked Uruguay the rest of the way to qualify for the RWC. That's all well and good but at this point we shouldn't be in a winner advances/loser stays home match against Uruguay. The reason we were AGAIN is that Canada is doing more with less and running away from us.

NZ won the Hong Kong 7s this week and Fiji won in Tokyo the week before. I think it's still a two horse race between NZ and South Africa but I haven't checked the new points totals post-HK7s.

NZ won the IRB Sevens (Olympic Rugby) series AGAIN this weekend with South Africa second. This should've been the year for someone else to step up and take it form NZ. They had injuries and were having to play new players because of age and injury. Instead, now they've got young players with live tournament experience integrated with the old warhorses hanging around for the Olympics in 2016.

CAPITAL CITY SCRUM
The growing popularity of rugged and fun rugby

It may very well be one of Columbus’ best-kept athletic secrets. And you’re probably a stone’s throw from someone who’s played it.

Rugby.

“Rugby makes the world tiny. It’s not even six degrees of Kevin Bacon,” said Steve Landes, who helms the Division Three men’s rugby club, Columbus Castaways. “But a lot of folks still don’t know that rugby is here. The problem seems to be that people who have been exposed would play if they knew it was available.”

The capital city rugby scene has depth that goes beyond what the average Joe may think Central Ohio has to offer.
“There’s a place for someone who’s never seen a rugby ball and those who are elite,” Landes said. “There’s a post for anyone.”

Cont'd ...

USA won the Plate Final, beating then log leaders Fiji. Isles had a great day. Several great tries. USA standard is surprisingly high. I'd rank them at least fifth right now. Very encouraging.

SA was sloppy today. Beat NZ to win the cup, but really played against the Australian ref too. Now top of the log and very much looking like #1.

You called it earlier in the year. The young Boks seem to be peaking at the right time going into 2016 and the NZ decline (relatively speaking, of course) has been more pronounced than I expected.

I read an article yesterday about Habana wanting to get into 7s pre-Rio Olympics. I think I'd be inclined to run with the young dogs you have.

Speed kills and they are very fast. Senatla and Afrika were a real pleasure to watch up close. I wonder if they are not peaking a bit early. My surprise was the USA. Taking out Fiji was a real accomplishment. They are half a step away. Starting to really play well together. Watching Isles turn on the jets a few times was good fun. Not sure if he is still faster than Senatla, but if he isn't, he is very close.

Are you guys watching your team? They beat South Africa in New Zealand and tied them in Las Vegas, losing the top place in the pool only by 4 points. They are in the quarterfinals against New Zealand. If they win that game, you have to be thinking that the US may get a medal in the Olympics at this pace of improvement.
