Losing a game in most cases will wake a team up to issues that they maybe did not know existed, or did and just couldn’t do anything about it. The loss to Michigan State was a case of an opponent exposing the expose the weaknesses and the Buckeyes staff just played right into their hands. Let’s get rolling with the good.

Rumblin’

I have to give props to the game-plan that Mark Dantonio brought into Columbus on Saturday.

The Spartans knew that if they could shut down the running game and make the Buckeyes throw the ball, it would mean a big win when Sparty needed it most. Their running game versus the Buckeyes was the best they have had this season.

They haven’t lead at any point in the two games they’ve won against their two primary rivals, but sometimes you just have to be lucky. Not really the case here, but they won on this day and my hats off to them for winning.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Rumblin’
Scott – Sparty on the ground. Ouch!
Ken – Walrusball – MSU (51 carries) bludgeoned the OSU defense
Michael – Sparty running game. Over 200 yards vs Ohio State. Wow
Joe – Is the world of college football finally going to give Mark Dantonio the respect that he deserves? He is one of the best coaches in the country and getting his team prepared for battle week in and week out. He has built up a mentality at a former cow college that winning is the only thing. I love that his guys know that at any moment they can make a play to win the game and that they are always in it no matter what.

Two wins on the season with no time on the clock?

That’s an ode to Mark Dantonio and the continuous growth of his program.

JC – The Spartans and their running game was too much for the Buckeyes, which I hate to admit. But it was!
Brandon – The Michigan State run game on that last drive. They rumbled right through the defense to put their team in position to win.

Stumblin’

The Buckeyes coaching staff is an easy choice here.

It appeared the defensive staff had a pretty decent game plan against Sparty but they had trouble rising to the occasion in the end when they knew what MSU was going to do. Maybe it was a case of being on the field way too much the entire game but the staff let this team down.

There have been too many occasions this season of hearing a player in the post game make the statement, “we prepared for this, but they showed us that”. I struggle with the mind set on offense or defense of only preparing for a singular set on defense or even understanding they could totally go away from tendencies.

That staff should know better than anyone that this is what coaching is about. Don’t let them stop your favorite thing without some adjustments. That staff didn’t put very much effort into MSU, evidently believing they should be able to run whatever they like and be successful with no plan B.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Stumblin’
Scott – Game plan. Why weren’t we selling out on the run? We knew they weren’t throwing.
Ken – OSU game preparation; Coaches did not have the team ready to play vs MSU
Michael – Ohio State coaches. Seems they forgot how to be a coach.
Joe – Everyone forgets that Tim Beck was not the first choice for Urban Meyer and company. Either was Ed Warinner. The first choice was keeping Tom Herman for as long as possible, because losing him meant zero chance at landing a coach that was actually on the upswing.

By the time Herman made his way to Houston and the Buckeyes had won a national championship, all of the great young offensive minds were already deep into contract negotiations with different teams.

Urban and company felt that they needed to give Ed Warinner the raise and promotion to keep him on staff after losing not only Herman but Stan Drayton as well. Turnover might be a huge issue this off-season, but Urban Meyer is stumblin’ for not realizing earlier that he had to step in for the new coaches running him system.
JC – The entire Coaching staff. Urban has to eat some of this blame. Personally I have it out more for Warinner and Beck. They are way too ineffective. Give the Offensive Coordinator job to Alford or Smith, or bring someone else aboard (for next season). Just take it away from Warinner & Beck ….. PLEASE!
Brandon – The Offensive line. Let’s be honest, last night is pretty much how the line has looked most of the year.

Bumblin’

It comes as no surprise to the entire world that play-calling is an issue. Putting a finger on exactly what that problem is can be tough but when the head coach steps up and says blame it on me? I guess that’s where you have to start.

Urban Meyer has always been the type of coach that doesn’t necessarily allow the staff call all of the shots. It appears he has given some of his coordinators some autonomy.

The two sharing those duties have done a fairly good job of setting up plays to call and for the most part, they have worked. Until this past Saturday, they had passed some of the tests along the way.

Urban Meyer should have seen what issues were presenting themselves on Saturday and stepped in. I made the argument to my wife that he cannot do that for fear of the staff checking out.

The more I think about it, will he be looking for a new coordinator in the off-season as he did when he hired Chris Ash? The more I believe he should have taken over the play calling on Saturday the first moment he got frustrated with the wrong call on a third and short and did not go for it on fourth and short.

We shall see this week what the answer is now that he said he will be more involved in the play calling. He made the same move on the defensive side and we see where they are today.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Bumblin’
Scott – Zeke. Keep it in the locker room.
Ken – Ohio State offensive game planning. Go to any local high school game; it will be better than what we saw on Saturday
Michael – Ohio States offense. Worst I’ve seen since 2011
Joe – The media that blew Ezekiel Elliott’s post game comments into a national story ought to be ashamed of themselves. Did the running back make a mistake by voicing his opinions so loudly afterwards? Absolutely and he has since owned up to it.

What has me bumblin’ all over these talking heads is that the same people that are begging for honest comments and not the traditional coach speak that we hear all week — are calling Elliott a bad leader and say he is setting a bad example for his teammates.

Fans on Saturday lit up the hashtag #soreloser and pointed it right at the player that gave them a national championship just a year ago. Does a sore loser cry before the game because he cares so much about winning against Michigan State.

Does a loser start and beg for the ball more after spending three days of the week in the hospital and isolated from his teammates all the way up to kickoff?

Go back to your keyboard and do something positive with it, like hit yourself over the head. Sound good?
JC – The Ohio State Offense period. Point the finger first at Warinner & Beck then at the entire offensive squad. They bit the big one and folded …. I hate to say it … but with the way they played, they absolutely deserved the loss.
Brandon – The offensive playcalling. It has been an issue all year but people only notice it now because they lost.
