S/LB Tyler Moeller (official thread)

Tyler sporting the Moeller-Hawk, or just the result of a quick shower, per JT.

He mentions that he's looking forward to a 6th year at tOSU, assuming that his paperwork for a medical hardship waiver (redshirt) is approved, once it's submitted upon completion of his 5th year of eligibility.

OSU football: Moeller's energy infuses defense
Safety contributing more than just good play after lost year

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Sometimes, Tyler Moeller arrives silently.

"A lot of times, I'll be back there and I see a guy running (toward me), and I think, 'Oh, I've got to make a tackle,'" Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa said. "Then I see Tyler fly by me and make the tackle before I can think twice about it."

Other times, Moeller arrives with a thud, like the second play last week against Ohio University. Teammate Devon Torrence had just tipped away a pass and thought he had an interception.

"I was about to catch it and Tyler came out of nowhere and just waylaid me," Torrence said.

Torrence got the wind knocked out of him. Moeller got the interception.

"As long as we got the turnover, I'm cool," Torrence said. "I can't be salty about that."

The return of Moeller from a severe head injury that cost him last season is a feel-good story, to be sure. He suffered bleeding on the brain after being punched in a bar and hitting his head on the floor, leading to emergency surgery.

"Every time I see (Moeller) out there, you know, I smile," coach Jim Tressel said, "because a year ago at this time, he was a miserable guy."

Moeller going for six?

While defensive back Tyler Moeller has to treat this as possibly his senior season, the fifth-year player thinks he'll have a good case if he applies to the NCAA for a sixth season of eligibility because of hardship.

Moeller sat out last season after he suffered a head injury when he was punched in a restaurant in Largo, Fla. The attacker, Ralph Gray Decker, pleaded guilty to felony battery in June.

"Now after everything has come out, and after the trial and my name is cleared, everyone is saying I should probably get it (the sixth year), and I don't see why I shouldn't get it," Moeller said.

But he can't apply until this season is over, which leaves him with a mental conundrum.

"It is tough getting that mindset: 'Hey, this is my last year, but it may not be my last year,'" Moeller said. "It's tough doing the senior things and it may not be my senior year. It would be nice if I could know now, but I understand why I can't."

OSU?s Tyler Moeller works out before the Buckeyes-Marshall game at Ohio Stadium. MORNING JOURNAL/NATE PARSONS

COLUMBUS ? It was a hit Tyler Moeller needed.

Even though he wasn?t the one delivering it.

It came in the opening days of contact practices at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The senior from Cincinnati Colerain, who missed his junior season at Ohio State while recovering from a head injury sustained in an assault in Florida, had recently been cleared to resume full-contact activities.

"Taurian Washington ran a slant and I didn?t see him coming," Moeller said with a smile. "That?s the first time (I got hit). I was like, ?OK, I?ll be fine.?"

Redemption Has A Name: Tyler Moeller

The story has all of the elements that make for good drama: overcoming limitations, success, tragedy, grappling with adversity, vindication, and ultimate triumph. It is the story of a young man from a not-always-Buckeye-friendly town who works his way onto the big OSU stage, only to have the moment crushed in a singular act of malice. Best of all, it is a story of the growth of indomitable determination and progress to the point of excellence, and of the moment when that young man, now more mature for the experience, finds his way back onto the stage and gives a memorable performance. We are currently enjoying the better part of the story in the form of Ohio State "Star" Tyler Moeller.

It was never a certainty that Moeller would have success as a Buckeye, or that he would even be one. As late as early June of 2005, OSU seemed to have little interest in the linebacker/safety prospect from Cincinnati's Colerain High School. At that time, his only offers were from Indiana, Kent, Miami (OH), and a few others. However, he picked up offers from Virginia Tech, Cincinnati and Kentucky after running a 4.52 40-yard dash at the UC camp, which were followed quickly by an offer from Iowa. In early July, there were signs that Ohio State was starting to seriously consider an offer of their own, and shortly afterward Tennessee got into the mix. Finally, OSU made an offer on 7/26, and Moeller accepted on 9/15.
