scUMs loss, bad for us in the long run?

I still say forget about the polls. This Buckeye team has a lot to fix before they can think about running the table this year. The o-line stunk, Beanie was sleep walking (admittedly), and the defense gave up bigger runs than they should.

Whether or not the Bucks win out is FAR more concerning than whether or not they'll get screwed out of the NC Game when they win out.

Indeed, Yertle.... I can't see worrying about Ohio State getting screwed out of a BCS berth when we're exactly 1 game in to the season.

And.... no, I won't be the least bit worried when Les Miles takes over. In fact, I will happily cheer the day.

Agreed. I'm not even entertaining thoughts of undefeated, NC game, polls or anything else.

In that regard its like 02/03 again for me personally...one week at a time and if we win everything will take care of itself.

As far as Les Miles goes that would be the best thing we could hope for imo.

Agreed, way to early.. although that is one of the dumbest things i've seen.. "well we over rated one team, so the rest must be too"

glad these guys are voting  what a joke

Les Miles would be great, but it could be better.. Jabba himself.

I like to think of it this way, Carr did fairly well against Ohio State before Tressel came to town, and we all know how it's been lately, so IMO it's Tressel's great coaching that's making a bigger impact than Lloyd's sometimes poor coaching.

They won't lose to mich St. I can see them losing to Wisky, PSU and us though. I'm not sure Mich st. has the pieces in place yet for Dantonio to win that game. Its going to definitely be interesting to see how mich. responds.

Dantonio had them humming in their first game. Very explosive. Very disciplined. Easy opponent, yes, but a very different vibe there. We cannot expect Sparty to roll over and ask for one more in the second half anymore, if they continue to play like that.

The interesting thing to me about this whole thing (dropping in the polls) is that nearly all these media guys will tell you that Tressel is in the top three or so coaches in CFB, but at the same time they say the Big Ten, and therefore tOSU, is over-rated. If we go undefeated again, these two attitudes will have to be reconciled in their minds. That's a "down the road" thing though, and not something I'm going to spend much time worrying about right now. Personally, I'm not expecting an undefeated season this year and I think, realistically, we are a number 6-10 type team this year. Loaded with talent? Yes. Loaded with experience? No. The polls don't mean shit to me right now and shouldn't for the team either IMO. And frankly, this is usually a blessing, like it was in 2002. Talk of NC games is sooo premature IMO. Talk of a B10+1 championship is also soo premature IMO. Let's find out if we can run the ball consistantly against Akron and Washington before we start talking about that kind of stuff. If I'm coaching this team, my expectations are quite tempered right now, looking for confidence building stuff before I start putting a "Nat'l Championship run" type pressure on this young team. JMHO and I know there are many of us out there that think every year is a "Nat'l Championship run" year. I personally don't believe that (even at the so-called media's "gold-standard" teams like USC, they don't do it every year do they? Voter love-fest and all). I think you set yourself up to make a "legit" run every other or third year (next year for us IMO), when your experience and a favorable schedule coincide. There are a lot of teams out there, right now, that are better than us IMO. Can we become that good by November? Sure we can. Tressel has done it before. But that type of early Nat'l Championship talk was fine for last year, when everyone knew what the team was all about. That's not where we are today though, IMO. This is a cliche "one week at a time" year. Things will work themselves out if we take care of business and what we should be looking for is a steady improvement as we go. What we shouldn't be doing, IMO, is thinking about January. I mean that as a fanbase and especially inside the team.

JMHO and I'm fine with those who disagree. We will see how this all plays out and if we are right there at the end, well, fucking 'aye right. We will deserve it, the Big Ten's "reputation" be damned...

Yea I don't think anyone here is expecting NC material right now. My expectations for this team are:
1. Beat Michigan (every year)
2. Go Bowling (every year)

I think we have a shot at the B10 championship, but an NC bid isn't even on my mind.
This year I intend to just enjoy the ride, watch the youngsters develop, see new leaders step up, and soak it all in.

I think this year...to win the Big 10...we probably need to go 8-0. If we do that...where is our loss? Washington? I sure hope not. Why not go undefeated this year? We get Wisky at home...and I hate scUM...so do we lose to PSU? I hope to all that is holy that we don't. Cuz I couldn't stand those PSU dumbasses in 2005. With our schedule this year...why not be NC material? But that's just me...and i'm a little crazy.

Well, you can't get enough cowbell, so I'd say you're crazy. Don't fear the reaper.

Anyways, even if Ohio State is a lock at 8-0 (which they aren't) the odds are still stacked against them.

Let's look at the schedule:

1. @ Penn State @ night - let's say we have a 60% chance at winning. That's a tough environment as we saw in 2005 and 2003.
2. Wisky at the Horseshoe - let's go with 60% again. We actually don't fair well against the Badgers in the shoe, so I don't want to go any higher.
3. Home against Illinois - let's say 95% chance at winning.
4. At the pighouse - let's go aggressive and say 70% chance at winning.

These numbers may all be on the high side, but statistically, it still only gives us a 24% chance (60% x 60% x 95% x 70%) at going 4-0 through that stretch. Undefeated is a rough thing to accomplish unless a team is FAR better than the competition for the entire year! It really makes 2002 that much more special.

Barry Alvarez had JTs number. Lets hope that shits stopped..

I'm optimistic, but I feel we have the talent to make it any year.. and this years schedule is perfect, IMO

Sure, our last 4 games are stacked.. but what does every JT team at tOSU have in common? They play continously better football, often times to the point that at the end of the year, they can play with anyone in the country. This is one of my theories as to JTs success in DIAA where the playoff system is in place.

JTs team always pick up steam and play their best games at the end of the year, which is perfect for that school up north.

It is really hard to believe Carr will return next year. Unless they run the deck, beat Ohio State and win BCS bowl game, he is finished.
Which would also be a perfect time to leave... vs facing a veteran OSU team in Cbus, without Henne, Hart, Long, and maybe MM & AA.

First of all, I generally agree with this comment, except for last year. Too many mistakes against an over-matched Michigan team, and then the mess in the desert.

Second, even if they are playing their best football at the end of the year this year, that doesn't mean that they win all the games. Even at a 75% at winning each game, the odds are clearly against a perfect season. I guess that's all I was trying to say - a perfect season takes a ton of luck (2002?) or a team that is FAR better than the competition (2006 until the bowl).

Well, I work with way too many scUM alumni, and they pretty much put it to me like this "Bo never won a NC, he's the heart of that program, Carr is his boy, he leaves when he wants to" which from reading a lot of stuff may be the way it goes. If Carr has any true love for the program he will realize that the game has passed him by and step down, but I don't know if Missagain will actually fire him, they have that whole "Michigan Man" loyalty. I thought he would get the axe last year, hell Sackcarr.com has been up for a while yet he's still there.

Then again, Bo passed away last year, so maybe there will be a change, who knows.

Wouldn't surprise me to drop an early game to UW or somebody else given the way our offense has played so far. Very streaky, very unpredictable -- seems like they're still trying to gel and play as a group.
Could be a lot like 2005, when we almost dropped a game to MSU. (Or even 2004 where we did drop a lot of games. =T)
It's also easy to get a piece of the B10 title with 1 loss. I'm not sold on anyone in the B10 going undefeated in-conference. Which is why I think we're in that discussion, and not necessarily the NC one.
