Seahawks (ex-USC) Coach Pete Carroll (official thread)

I was listening this morning to Fox Sports Radio, and Chris Lansing ( I believe that is his name) said the deal is already done; Seattle is waiting to announce the hiring until they have complied with "The Rooney Rule", which requires the club to interview minority candidates for any open NFL positions. Seattle was going to be interviewing a couple of guys this weekend, so possibly the Pete Carroll announcement might actually come Monday.

Lets not forget that this isn't Carroll's first rodeo in the NFL. He has already had failures with the Jets (6-10) and the Pats. Seattle will not be the major market Carroll needs to propell himself and the team as a winner. He would have been better off pushing the Raider franchise into hiring a new HC, where he would be staying in an area that is well familar with him.

I wouldnt consider his coaching in NE a "failure" He went to the playoffs, won a playoff game and did have an overall winning record. He was replaced by Belichik too.

USC coach Pete Carroll criticized Sanchez for his decision to enter the draft after his junior season. The news Carroll was leaving USC for the Seattle Seahawks gave Sanchez the perfect opportunity to respond moments after winning his playoff debut 24-14 over the Cincinnati Bengals.

"I just wanted everybody to know I completely disagree with his decision," Sanchez said, unable to stifle laughter. "Statistics show that it's not a good choice."

They'll be fined $250k. Most RR interviews are pretext, anyway.

Yeah this demonstrates a pretty big problem with the RR. It is plausible that the Seahawks were not going fire Mora unless Carroll wanted the job. Confirming his interest and agreeing in principle is something that is entirely logical if that is the case. A team should not be penalized for that and minority candidates should not wonder if they are actually candidates.

Sources: Seattle, Carroll agree on deal

Carroll was expected to be introduced by the Seahawks as early as Monday, after the team interviewed Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday morning.
According to the sources, Frazier met with the Seahawks in Minneapolis, satisfying the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview a minority candidate for head coaching and senior football operations hires.
Leiweke told Frazier before the interview Carroll did not have Seattle's job. Frazier had been unwilling to talk with the Seahawks about the vacancy if Carroll had been promised full control of the Seahawks. Multiple sources indicated to ESPN he had been.
Even so, on Saturday Carroll personally called John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, the organization designed to ensure that teams abide by the Rooney Rule, to assure him that he had no deal with Seattle.
"He said, 'I wouldn't try to be disruptive to what you're trying to do, and I support what you're trying to do,' " Wooten said Saturday night. "He said, 'I feel comfortable at USC, and if the deal isn't what I want it to be, I'll just stay right here at Southern Cal. But I need to talk to Seattle to clear up any issues.' He said he never would get into any arrangement that would cause controversy or undermine the Fritz Pollard Alliance. As long as I've known Pete Carroll over the years, he's been honest. I take him at his word."
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, asked about the Seahawks coaching search on the field before the Jets-Bengals playoff game Saturday in Cincinnati, told ESPN's Rachel Nichols he believed the Seahawks' interview with Frazier was in earnest.
Goodell said Seattle had fulfilled not only the letter but the spirit of the Rooney Rule, saying there was "no done deal" between Carroll and Seattle as of Saturday morning.

It seems like the Seahawks really screwed themselves with this one by allowing everything to leak so quickly. If I'm not mistaken, the minority interview rule at issue requires good faith interviewing of minority candidates. So, an organization doesn't satisfy the rule merely by conducting minority interviews. If it can be demonstrated that those interviews were mere pretext, the organization can still get in trouble. If I've ever heard of a situation in which minority interviews were held pretextually, it would be this one.

I take it back. Apparently even transparently pretextual interviews will suffice . . . .
