Shooting 49 percent overall and 48 percent from 3. WOW.

His 49% overall would be a lot higher if he could make a layup. It always amazes me how guys like Diebler and Thomas can drain anything 15' and out blindfolded but then on the next trip down the floor will miss three consecutive bunnies.

it wouldn't be that much higher. over 80% of his shot attempts have been behind the arc. he's made 18 of 33 shots inside the arc. nobody makes all of his layups or bunnies. even the best players will miss gimmes. add 4 more makes for an outstanding 66% and he's shooting just 2 percentage points more overall. meh.

Ohio State senior guard Jon Diebler arrived on campus four years ago with a reputation.

Diebler's 3,208 points in high school still stand as the all-time record for Ohio. His 41 points per game as a high school senior led the nation. A year prior, as a junior, Diebler scored 77 points in a single game, and as a sophomore he led his team to a 27-0 record and a Division II State Championship.

Put simply, everyone knew Diebler could shoot the basketball. So it should come as no surprise that perhaps the most prolific scorer in Ohio high school history, and currently the starting shooting guard on the nation's No. 1 college team, is closing in on the Big Ten record for 3-pointers made in a career.

Despite all he had accomplished before coming to Columbus, there was a time when Diebler's future might have seemed dim.

As a freshman at OSU, he was not nearly the scorer many expected him to be. Diebler averaged just six points in his 21 minutes per game, and his frigid 29 percent from beyond the 3-point line had many Buckeye fans wondering whether he could live up to the hype.

OSU coach Thad Matta, however, never lost confidence.

"I've always had great faith in Jon," Matta said. "I think, at times, I was the only one that had great faith in Jon, including himself."

His faith was well-deserved.

Diebler has been a staple in the Buckeyes' starting lineup for the past three seasons and has averaged a team-high 34 minutes in OSU's 24 games this season. His 49 percent from the field is tied for second on the team, and his 47 percent from behind the 3-point line is a team high. It's easy to see how far he's come since his struggles as a freshman.

"You have to have a certain confidence about yourself," Diebler said. "I think that's where I've grown the most. I've become a lot more confident, not only shooting the ball but developing my game as an overall player."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Jon Diebler (33) has made 328 three-pointers in his career, four short of the official Big Ten record.

Big Ten records

Three-point field goals made
1. 339* ? Louis Bullock, Michigan (1996-99)
2. 332 ? Pete Lisicky, Penn State (1994-98)
3. 331 ? Shawn Respert, Michigan State (1991-95)
4. 328 ? Jon Diebler, Ohio State (2007- )
5. 327 ? Cory Bradford, Illinois (1998-2002)

*-record vacated because of NCAA violations

Three-point field goals attempted
1. 885 ? Joe Crispin, Penn State (1997-2001)
2. 845 ? Craig Moore, Northwestern (2005-09)
3. 843 ? Cory Bradford, Illinois (1998-2002)
4. 831 ? Dee Brown, Illinois (2002-06)
5. 829 ? Pete Lisicky, Penn State (1994-98)
6. 817 ? Talor Battle, Penn State (2007- )
7. 815 ? Jon Diebler, Ohio State (2007- )

Keith Diebler remembers his other two sons, Jeremiah and Jacob, trailing him to practice almost from the time they could walk.

"Jake was practically in diapers hanging onto my leg when I was going to the gym," he said. "Jake was always going to the gym."

The youngest was different.

"My wife, Renee, always commented to me, 'When are you going to start taking Jon?'" Keith said. "I told her, 'I really don't want him to go till he wants to.' Jon was more interested in Legos. He loved to sit and play Legos."

Finally, by the time Jon was in sixth or seventh grade, Keith recalled, he started going to the gym with his dad and brothers. Sort of.

"The first week or two, he slept on my couch in the office," Keith said.

With a smile, Jon acknowledged, "I used to be kind of lazy when I was younger."

Even when he finally did make it to the court, he didn't jump into drills with the older boys, as Jake did.

"He was the skinny kid, off by himself to the side, shooting threes," Keith said.

Time well spent, as it turns out.

Soon, Jon Diebler will have more three-point field goals than anyone else in Big Ten history.

He has 328 going into Ohio State's game at Wisconsin on Saturday, four short of the league-designated record by Pete Lisicky of Penn State and 11 shy of the unofficial mark by Louis Bullock of Michigan, which was vacated because of NCAA violations in the Wolverines program during Bullock's career.

"I honestly had no idea I was close until it was mentioned to me this year," Diebler said. "I thought it was some crazy number."
"I think what makes coach Matta such a great coach, and why he gets great players, is because he shows an extreme amount of confidence in you and he allows you to play the game. Everybody wonders why every year he's got one of the top recruiting classes. I think that's why."

I still think Diebs should be shooting for 340, to break the true Big Ten record of 339 held by Louis Bullock.

Regardless of the shameful cheating that his school engaged in, it seems churlish for the league to vacate the individual record set by this fine player. Bullock was only 18 when he chose to become a Wolverine; lifetime punishment for such a youthful mistake seems extreme.

I think he will end up higher than 340 by year end.

Bullock, like Traylor and Webber, took money from Ed Martin that was clearly against the rules. I have no problem with his individual record being vacated. I think if somebody wants to feel any sympathy for any TSUN players, it should be for the teammates of the actual cheaters who had the team's accomplishments wiped out.

But I'll still be glad to see Diebler to get to 340, so he has no conditions attached to his career 3-point record. And he should get there before the end of the regular season.

I believe that he had one up in Madison so currently I believe he is sitting at 329 and if he does not reach 340 I will be shocked. Usually during this season, he has a couple games where he knocks down 3-4 in one game and if he does one of those before the season ends he will easily reach 340.
