SI's Ohio State Top 10 Athletes Gallery

I know they're trying to be as diverse as possible, spanning eras, sports, etc. And Katie Smith is an incredible athlete and has been great for The Ohio State Wmen's Basketball Program and the University alike.

But having said that, there's just no way she's top ten (or even close for that matter imo) tOSU Athlete's of All Time.

But enough of my 'downer' comments...over-all, a nice list and very cool pics!

I agree some what(though I disagree with you saying it isn't close. Her accomplishments are really incredible if you think about it). I'd probably put Havlicek on there instead of her. You would also have to consider football players like Orlando Pace(arguably the best collegiate and professional O-line in the last 15-25 years) and Randy Gradishar, and even AJ Hawk.

I probably would've kept Katie Smith on there and replaced Oden with Havlicek.

I completely agree; I think Oden was a bit premature, since 1) he only stayed for a year, and 2) there was no Pace or Havlicek..

Orlando Pace is *the* best lineman ever. He invented a statistic, for gosh sakes. And if you wanted to stick with basketball, Havlicek has a place ahead of Oden in Buckeye lore.

I can't really argue w/ any of the selections-on raw talent alone Oden could perhaps be #1, but I would say that not having Havlicek or Butch Reynolds on there is a shame-they are both better than Katie Smith, but I understand the need to be "inclusive". Heck, we probably have some girl who we can't name who won 4 NCAA synchronized swimming championships in a row-she probably deserves to be in the Top 10 too.....

very very tough to try to pick a top ten... but I am all for having Katie Smith on there. She is still lighting it up in Detroit and is a cold-heart shooter. If only Jamal Butler had shot like that in the championship game!

Jim Jackson? awfully good. Got Randy Ayers a contract extension he was so good.

Just watched the National Championship game from 2002/2003. How about the entire D line from that team??

Havlicek was great but became famous in the NBA.

jay Burson's stats were probably better than Hondo's.

Also, no Les Horvath? Vic Janowicz?

Peace out

They should have just made it a top-15 with all the talent that has walked the Oval.

In defense of Katie Smith, she and Swoopes were the face of women's collegiate athletics in the early 90's, not just basketball. The 1993 women's championship game was a classic for any Buckeye/TT fan, even if you don't respect the women's game...

If you're going to put Oden in the top-10, make him #10. Ahead of Troy and Jack? Not yet, I don't think so.

I'm not sure what is more significant in the history of sports than the statement Owens made in the 1936 Olympics. Might be the greatest athlete ever. Period.

Don't get me wrong. I think Katie Smith was / is incredible. Anyone who is up there as possibly the greatest athlete OSU Women's Basketall has produced, maybe even in the Big Ten is deserving of being in the conversation.

But me personally (and I know it shows my bias for FB & Men's BB) I would put all our Heismans before her (even one or two not listed ahead of Eddie perhaps), Chic Harley, Orlando, at least a couple LBs, half a dozen Men's BB players, a couple other FB players who could have won the Heisman (close, but no cigar) who aren't remembered as one of OSU's elite only because they finished 2nd or 3rd in the vote.

So maybe my statement "not even close imo" depends on what you interpret as being "close". Would she be in my top 20? No...top 40, probably. But like I said before, I understand the probable reasonings for her being there. I just think she's quite a bit too high considering the other potential candidates, but then again it probably wouldn't be that great a list if it was 7 Football players, 2 Men's Basketball, and Jesse Owens.
