Spring Football Outlook: Who to Watch For (Offense)
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? With such an abrupt conclusion to the Ohio State basketball season, it seems hard to believe that spring football could be just days away.
It is going to be a strange year around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, but between the lines, football is still football.
Even with Terrelle Pryor and four teammates set to miss the first five games of the 2011 season, there will still be 11 Buckeyes on the field when Akron comes to Columbus on Sept. 3 for the season-opener.
Who those 11 players on each side of the ball will be is going to be as interesting as anything that happens off the field. With that in mind, we take a look at a number of players to watch for this spring, starting with the offense.

Spring Football Outlook: Who to Watch For (Defense)
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Spring practice is right around the corner, and it promises to be one of the most interesting in recent history.
Ohio State announced that coach Jim Tressel will meet with the media Wednesday to preview spring football, but we are already one step ahead.
In our first Spring Outlook piece, we picked some key offensive players to watch this spring, especially with Terrelle Pryor likely being out because of the foot injury.
Here is a look at some defensive players to keep an eye on as the Buckeyes try to replace seven key seniors on defense, including Cam Heyward, Brian Rolle, Ross Homan and Jermale Hines.

Intriguing players in spring practice
As a follow-up to the story Tim May and I did for Sunday's paper, I present a list of players -- by position -- who I think have the most interesting story lines this spring:
QB -- Braxton Miller. Duh. How good is he? Can he be the guy by opening day?
(Runner-up: Kenny Guiton. The "other" exciting young player.)
RB -- Rod Smith. He's got the size, speed, and off-season buzz. So let's see him.
(Runner-up: Carlos Hyde. Is he more like Beanie, or Jermil Martin?)
WR -- Chris Fields. If he's not ready to play, a freshman will have to start.
(Runner-up: T.Y. Williams. He's huge, but is he any good?)
OL -- Andrew Norwell. It's one thing to fill in at right tackle. It's another to start at left.
(Runner-up: Marcus Hall. After a year away, what's he got?)
DL -- Pick one: J.T. Moore, Darryl Baldwin, Melvin Fellows, David Durham. Will one of these young guys provide some pass rush off the edge this year?
(No runner up)
LB -- Etienne Sabino. Suffering from chronic Careeris Interruptus. Now or never.
(Runner-up: Dorian Bell. It's time.)
DB -- Dionte Allen. Transfer provides intrigue at corner. Can he compete for a job?
(Runner-up: Jamie Wood. Young guy who hopes to enter crowded safety mix)

Not a generic camo helmet I've seen pictures of, but a Buckeye camo helmet.
Also, please don't grab a picture that's premium content from another site.

Projected Spring Depth Chart: Offense
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? It?s finally here; Christmas in March.
After another ?ho-hum? basketball season in which the Buckeyes lost just three games all year, football once again takes center stage in Columbus.
No, spring practice isn?t on the same level as the start of fall camp, and it certainly pales in comparison to the real thing, but football is still football. With a potential NFL lockout looming, every snap is at a premium.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and his team hit the practice field for the first of 15 times today, in what will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting off-seasons in school history.
Obviously there is a lot still to be decided off the field, but on the field things should be pretty interesting as well. We take a look out our projections for Ohio State?s spring depth chart based on the official roster that was released Wednesday.

Projected Spring Depth Chart: Defense
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Buckeyes will hit the practice field this afternoon for the start of spring practice.
Defensive Coordinator Jim Heacock expects an exciting spring (link), with a lot of competition as Ohio State looks to replace seven starters on defense.
New assistant head coach Luke Fickell, who also coaches the linebackers, said the Buckeyes must replace 1,100 production points on defense, something they haven?t had to do since after the 2005 season.
Here?s a look at how the depth chart projects on defense heading into spring ball.

Projected Spring Depth Chart: Special Units
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? We have already given you projections for the offensive (link) and defensive (link) depth charts this spring, but special teams are an equally important aspect of the game.
The Buckeyes have learned that the easy way and the hard way during Jim Tressel?s decade in Columbus. They must replace a senior kicker and long-snapper from a year ago, but do have blue-chip snapper Bryce Haynes coming in the summer.
Until them, where?s what the special teams depth chart projects like for spring practice.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will sport custom-painted helmets honoring the American military as part of the 2011 Spring Football Game tribute to America's finest on Saturday, April 23, at Ohio Stadium. That day will feature tributes to the 75th anniversary of Jesse Owens' Olympic performance in Berlin, as well as recognition of servicemen and women and Buckeye All-Americans.
The distinctive football helmets are painted in a silver, gray and black camouflage pattern registered and designed specifically for Ohio State. Each helmet will feature an American flag decal on the front and a Jesse Owens commemorative decal on the back.
