The Big Ten Needs to Get Their Act Together

I think I found out why the B1G is having such a hard time. We need to raid the servers at Bristol, CT....

Every school in the B1G gets $40million per year from the television deals. When people start watching deans and department heads on tv by the millions every week, then you will have an argument.

And every B1G school attracts hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding every year (over $900M at Ohio State last year, which by standard multipliers is $14B in total economic impact and over 34K jobs), so the entire athletic department budget is a fraction of the economic impact to both Ohio State and the state of Ohio in comparison to Ohio State's research. And what is the underlying purpose of Ohio State's existence? To provide sporting entertainment or to provide the citizens and taxpayers of Ohio with a world class research university?

2. Ped State is what it is - it's now a good school that built its image on a myth with a sports coach. The school didn't get its act together until well into the 20th century, when sports moved to the forefront of the American psyche.
.

Yep. Not elected into the AAU until 1959. Which also bares the lie that Joesus created Penn State. I would guess that US investment in academic research in WW2 and the fifties was the catalyst for their eventual election, not the freakin' football coach.

REPORT: BIG TEN MEMBERS RECEIVED AS MUCH AS $30.9 MILLION IN CONFERENCE PAYOUTS

According to Big Ten legend, an ESPN executive once told Jim Delany he'd be rolling the dice if he walked away from the conglomerate's offer for the rights to Big Ten games.

"Consider them rolled," Jim Delany reportedly replied before walking out of the room.

It seemed like quite the gambit at the time, but now? Not so much.

According to Chip Scroggins of StarTribune.com, the Big Ten paid $30.9 million to each of its members last year. Rutgers and Maryland likely did not receive the full share, much like Nebraska didn't upon joining the league. The Big Ten office also gets a cut.

Of the payments, $7 million was generated by the Big Ten Network, a number that's going to balloon after BTN signs another TV rights deal next year.

The SEC, by comparison, shelled out as much as $31.2 million per school.

That'd be a good year's work by most companies standards, but Jim Delany reportedly thinks the Big Ten could net its schools as much as $50 million per year in the near future.
