Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

I'm not sure how old you are, but tOSU went 33 SEASONS (1969 through 2001) without a national championship. It isn't easy and other teams have players who have talent and coaches who work hard too. Perhaps the sense of entitlement from such a large and vocal fan base is part of what causes players to lose some of the mental edge that they need when expectations are high, and maybe it's no coincidence that tOSU seems to win its titles when nobody expects them to do so. A coach who wins a national championship at Ohio State is a success. Period. I do think that Urban will win more of them here (I anticipate the next one coming from a disrespected and angry team in 2017 after a 3+loss season next year) and I will be disappointed if he doesn't, but it certainly won't make him a failure.
I think the issue is we expected a lot this year knowing that most of our team would be leaving and knew that 2016 would be rebuilding and not knowing how long it would take. 2015 team might be the most talent I've ever seen at osu and we may not get that again. Recruiting be damned as you never know how a kid will turn out. This years team was as sure of a bet as there ever will be. I guess they said the same thing about the 2002 Miami team though.

Lemme try...

Event (Herman Leaving) + Response (Hiring Beck) = Outcome (Largest mismanagement of a collective talent in possibly OSU History).

Urban has done many great things since getting here, and will hopefully do great things before he leaves. But if he leaves with ever having a collection of athletes like this who manage to put up less than 150 total yards in a game, he will have failed. And he will have nobody to point to but himself.

@Jagdaddy is right, Natties are really hard to come by and we have clearly won more than our share. We have all gown accustom to being the big fish... sometimes in a smaller pond and sometimes the biggest fish in a big pond. It's easy to fall into that trap. However, judging the success of the program merely based on natties is going to leave you severely disappointed.

That said, there's a big difference between championships and what we saw on the field last Saturday. If things like that were to continue, the use of the word 'failure' most certainly comes into the vocabulary. I trust that we'll never see something like that ever again.

I, too, expect a few in the L column in '16. If I learn my lessons from '15, every one in the W column will be enjoyed fully. But at no time do I expect to see less than 150 yards of production and only 2 plays going to one of the top RBs in college football ever again. I suspect that UFM feels the same. He, however, is in a position to do something about it.

My sincerest of hopes is that the media outbursts after Sparty do not cause recruiting issues in the '16 class... and frankly, don't force the staff to have to recruit the '15 class all over again as well.

Tressel came to OSU from Div 1AA. Urban came to OSU winning championships at a 33% clip from a Div 1 school. If Saban won one title in 6 years at Bama, would that have been a great tenure? I'd argue no.
His national championships came against Texas with no Colt McCoy, rematch with LSU, and against a overrated ND (other being against Oklahoma when everyone was beating Oklahoma in bowls)

Before Saban, Alabama hadn't won a NC since 1992, and before that, 1979. Saban has won multiple titles, but that has also increased expectations for him exponentially.

Most of the team is on reload next year including both offensive tackles. There are going to be some difficulties and only seeing one probable loss is definitely wearing the scarlet and gray glasses.

Meh, I actually am not too worried about Jamarco at RT and Prince at LT next year.

Although I see nothing wrong with one probable loss and that's not being a homer; there could be 3-4 toss up games and odds are you lose half of those, but what other games are 'probable' losses on the schedule?

Most would agree it's been a season of the offense underachieving greatly.

this

I said trust Urban in the hiring, I'll trust him in any firing.

I do think the boss coming out and saying he will be taking a more active role in doing the underlings job is usually a pretty bad sign for the underling.

Yep, there's no way you can watch the first 6 minutes of Urban's presser today and come to any other conclusion than Beck is done, and Urban's just trying to fill the gap until the end of the year and not embarrass him too much in the process. He's not relishing this, but I'm pretty confident after watching this that he knows what needs to be done and will do it when the time is right.
