Tony "Benedict" Alford (meh)

Did he get that much more?
I read that it was close to $1mil more, but he also got years added to his contract. Day was only going to let him play out this year, and then talk at seasons end

Per Birm:
Ohio State has known Tony Alford has been looking for another job for like, six years. At some point, the discussion has to change and become "well, if you don't want to be here, you don't have to be here."

Buckeyes offered to add another year to his contract for increased "security" but Michigan had a third year and a little more money annually.

He is an absolute fool to go to Ann Arbor.

Chip Kelly is a running game guru. Alford had a good early run but fell off the mark the last three years, albeit with a lot of that deficit due to line play. I wondered if they would be clashing. Woody was pissed off that Bo stole his playbooks and then went to TCUN. Don't know what Alford has seen about Chip Kelly's offense but it can't be finished in its design yet and whatever the heck Alford was doing...um...heck no.

We all have the chance to make foolish moves that define our career badly. Tony Alford just made his. Two years at TCUN, a firing, and a life in the MAC.

Replacing the RB coach has to be about the easiest thing on the staff. You teach the players to know the plays—which hole to hit, who you’re supposed to block, after that, the player either has the instincts and mentality to be good, or they do not. With that in mind, it’s at least 80% recruiting, and there should be plenty of options out there who can excel at that, possibly even at a level beyond what Alford was achieving for the past several years.

A coach can make moves that are best for them and their family, but the timing and destination make this far beyond that. And on top of that, it is being reported his new contract isn’t even going to be substantially larger.

I hope the circumstances of his departure tarnish his reputation and negatively impact his ability to do his job well up there, particularly when it comes to recruiting Ohio State’s current top targets in the ‘25 class.

Going to a dumpster fire that's bracing for sanctions could actually work out if She-ron Moore gets a show-cause. Alford could backdoor his way into an interim head coach job.

Zach Smith is saying that this move is somewhat personal between Alford and Day evidenced by every other coach getting extended while Alford got a pay cut on his one year left. And Day told the whole staff after the bowl game that their jobs weren't guaranteed so you can't fault Alford for taking a long term deal from a place that wants him. Especially when Day gives his useless buddy a two year deal with a raise just to fire him after one with the second year paid out in a pretty clear case of using taxpayer funds to enrich a friend. And you have Hartline next to you getting paid coordinator money when his receivers can only pay flag football - directly affecting the run game.

You can fault him for the destination but that's the place with money that's having a hard time attracting coaches. And maybe he has dreams about sticking it to Day.

You certainly seem to be a Zach Smith disciple.

Given that he apparently has been looking for a job for half a decade without success, maybe he should look in the mirror a little bit more regarding the terms of his contract.

You're a Hartline Truther? Have you spliced together a highlight reel yet of Buckeye receiver nastiest blocks from 2023? Hit me up when you finish it. Hopefully you can fit in a bonus clip of Marvin's extra effort on that interception.
