Game Thread tOSU @ Penn State, Oct 25th @ 8pm ET, ESPN

I'd like to see a silver lining on this game, see that we beat a good D in a tough environment, but it's hard not to see and think that a really good football teams beats this PSU team easily. Seeing our offense revert was just sad. Reminded me far far far too much of Vtech, coaches cannot adjust to the pressure, playcalling goes into Jim Bollman mode... like seriously did he sneak up there and steal the OC headset?

You can look at this game and say that we toughed it out, but you also look at this game and think "Shit, we have to play a better D at their house in a few weeks in MSU, and as Vtech and PSU showed, constantly designing nice blitzes totally shuts down our offense and makes them go into careful mode.

Agree.
A superior team would not have lost at home, at night, to Va. Tech. no matter who they played the week before or how young their QB was.

That loss will keep OSU out of a potential playoff no matter what.

I did not see them pissing away that lead to a very MEDIOCRE team last night.

Looking forward to next year.

They were in conservative mode from the beginning.

The bottom line is that if Ohio State just runs the ball in the second half those two interceptions don't happen and they probably win the game comfortably with 17 points. Pretty, no. Effective, yes.
They should have never gone away from the intermediate routes to the WR's and TE's. Heuerman was open all day, and we went away from throwing the ball to him. As they typically do.

Also, I have to disagree. If they went to running the ball 100% of the time. PSU would bring the blitz and shut it down, like they did in the second half. The only runs that were remotely successful were the plays out of the wildcat, and even those were hit or miss.

This offensive line still has a long way to go.

On the bright side at least we can finally defend a simple WR screen pass. I still wake up in the middle of the night due to Nam flashbacks to the 73 (all numbers approximate) WR screens Clemson ran against us in the Orange Bowl

Now they need to work on breaking those plays up. The only pass Hackenberg could complete last night was the screen to the flat. Anything over the middle or deep was nearly picked every time.

Does anyone else think Hackenberg has regressed? He looked like a freshman making some of those reads he made last night.

Credit to the Kitties. They made us work for it and that stadium was unbelievable. We're better off coming out than going in. A good/great team has to be able to win games like that. It's not good that we had to rely on the defense but it's good to finally have a defense with some fight in it. Maybe this will be like the wake-up call against MSU in '12. Every game's not going to be a forty point win. I'm more comfortable going to michigan-lite have gutted out a win like this in Beaverville than if we'd walked over them like last year.

I think there's some overreacting going on to last night...and I'm probably guilty of some of it in the moment. Every team will have a clunker or two each year. Bammer barely beat a bad Arkansas team earlier this year. I'm not convinced Arkansas is better than the pedtards on a neutral field. In the end, they gutted out a win in a very hostile environment. The momentum appeared to be totally against them, and when it counted, they got into the endzone twice against a pretty damn good defense that was fresh after not spending much time on the field the entire 2nd half.

That might be the best defense we face all year, including sparty. Sparty has shown vulnerability against offenses with a pulse (read: not scUM). We may very well get rolled by sparty. Wouldn't surprise me. But, I'm not totally writing it off. Keep that game close, and JT showed last night that he has the guts to put the team on his back. And the defense is coming along quite nicely.

I rewatched the game this morning and i will point out that JT did some uncharacterist things last night when throwing. Obviously he rushed to throw on the two picks but on the redzone throw on our opening drive he threw it out of the back of the endzone when he had Huerman and Dontre wide open on medium routes. He gambled on some throws instead of taking what he could get.

Personally I'm not upset after re watching it. We were nervous, lacked any confidence (coaches and players), and were far too conservative. I chalk this up to being young and most assuredly being wide eyed with the environment. We almost needed a win like this...

Side note i personally feel the coaching staff needs to quit talking about each team like they're the Dallas Cowboys. I actually think in both our close games our guys came in Believing they were up against something they couldn't answer. Challenge them to blow their doors off but it's human nature to have DOUBT when your head coach is talking about the opponent being the top ranked rush defense, top defense overall, how scary it is to play there etc...

Too much credit is given to teams when we play tough opponents. It gives them confidence and IMO weakens ours

This is why I don't understand the blue haired "get off my lawn" crowd at the Shoe who want everyone to shut up and sit down. There's no reason why we can't generate that kind of environment.
