2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Any updates on Barksdale?

I think he could fill in on a couple of these positions.

Joseph? Or Avon?

Pretty much an even trade. Johnson has the benefit of being a possible corner, whereas Woodbey is strictly a safety.

Except that the DE class should've been Cox and Smith, and now it's Smith and Alex Williams. That's a pretty big downgrade, at least on paper.

QB is the one position where you can sign a kid fully expecting him not to be a contributor for three years. Jones is clearly the better prospect now, but in 2020, Baldwin might actually be the better player.
Good point on#1 & 3

Yes the class should have been Smith, but it's been a very long time since that was probable. It feels like huge downgrade because of the possibility of Cox and Smith and Oweh in the summer with 5 star Parsons begging to get in. Parsons was never a take. They won one of the 50-50 battles with PSU.

If they only had Williams without Smith ,or Oweh (which was a strong possibility a week ago), it would be a huge disappointment. As it stands now, it's a significant step down but still a really good class. They may yet add Friday as a signing day special.

What were the problems the early signing period was trying to solve, again?
The really fun part is that an honest school really can't answer whether they have a spot for them. They just take them now and then grayshirt them later after they've signed. This shift has created a world where "dumped a day before signing day" is a more noble scenario.

OSU can't answer whether Dre'Mont Jones, Johnnie Dixon, Parris Campbell will be on scholarship next year. Technically that can be extended to Mike Weber or Damon Arnette too.

Nothing to add but the fact that the early signing period has certainly made for a lot of drama.

Double the drama and double the fun! It's going to be interesting to see if any of the kids start to arbitrage the system. Hold off sending in papers to see if someone didn't sign and then jumping their spot because they had the opportunity... It's not like a kid _has_ to sign on 12/20. He could just as easily say that he wanted to wait until the first week of February.

Going to give Herbie and the College GameDay crew the benefit of the doubt here. Regardless all the other ancillary stuff surrounding this recruitment, the NCAA rules are ridiculous.

Did Herbie know the rule?
Probably. But he's a media member, and it's his job to entertain.

On the other hand, was Parsons informed of the rule?
Given UFM's strict adherence to the rule book, I'm going to go with "Parsons was informed he shouldn't go on stage."

So was the punishment of a 1-game suspension to the organizer of Parson's tour fair?
I am guessing that he was the scapegoat. He probably informed Parsons not to go, and Parsons went anyway.

Of course these are all assumptions.
