tOSU Transfer Portal Recruiting Discussion

I tend to think this is true….at the QB position, I think OSU is at a level where they pick rather than recruiting…..I don’t think there was any recruiting when it came to Fields. That was a done deal before Fields announced his decision to transfer.

My biggest question would be if it’s a guy currently in portal, or someone who has not entered yet…..

I think the lack of OSU interest in any QB’s in portal is actually quite telling….feels like they have something up their sleeve.
The only one I find intriguing that is not in the portal is Michael Pratt from Tulane.

They also said it may stir up crap with Scum, which may be Dante Moore. Whom, I am not sure about.

One of the top pass rushers in the transfer portal will no longer be visiting Ohio State this weekend.

Per On3's Pete Nakos, UTSA defensive end Trey Moore has switched his visit plans this weekend, opting to visit Alabama instead of Ohio State. Moore had taken an official visit to Texas last weekend, and the Longhorns have been viewed as the heavy favorite to land the coveted transfer target.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Moore was third in the nation in sacks in the regular season after registering 14 sacks for the Roadrunners.

Birm:

This visit is not happening, fwiw. He's a 3-4 OLB in Ohio State's opinion and doesn't fit what they do so they've decided against bringing him in

That kid from UGA is intriguing.

I’m somewhat confused about scholarships at OSU right now. I understand several kids thought to be locks for heading to the draft are reconsidering that position and may return. Regardless of that fact 14 portal kids have already announced leaving with the possibility of more after the bowl game. Doing the math you don’t get exact math. But something like: Portal + Graduation +early NFL = Number. Whatever that number ends up as you take that against the 85 active player count. This leaves you with far more space than I first thought would be available. I didn’t see 14 or more people leaving by portal.

Now my question:
OSU seems to be slow playing the portal. Is it about fit or NIL Cap? Waiting on declarations for Staying or Leaving? Even with that, If they got all the position needs, it still leaves space. That brings into the equation recruiting. Our current class is on the smaller side. Even before the 14 portal players we had extra room if we wanted it. Now there should be considerable room. (If my assumption are correct) Have we seen tons of new offer for the 2024? Not really? Major efforts to flip kids? A little bit. Even if we got all our flip targets we still have room, at least I think that to be the case. Something isn’t adding up.

Where am I missing the picture?

This is pretty obvious to me. Aside from the elite portal guys, the process is going to be slow until signing day. Because immediately the next tier of schools will come after your HS commits at the same position, once a transfer commits. The coaches have enough on their plates with signing day already.

Add me to the list of those questioning tOSU's QB/portal strategy. Fact is, we've got a pretty decent QB room now, what with Air Noland joining in January, plus Kleinholtz and Brown already there. Looking down the road, St. Clair next year, and a couple of studs in '26 sniffing the scarlet and gray air, the succession seems pretty stout. Bringing in a stop-gap, single year QB MIGHT be the answer, but could also cause hesitation in the pipeline. Bringing in a multiple-year QB would definitely cause pipeline problems, IMHO. But waiting to see how well Devin does in the bowl game, or Kleinholtz, probably means that the 'elite' portal puppies will already have committed elsewhere. Day & Co are sounding like they're going to roll the dice for pretty high stakes. Growth of a QB is iffy at best, and with Gene Smith gone in June, Day is out on a precarious limb.

Also concerned by a lack of action from the Oline and Dline front. Seeing 'highly rated' OL guys finding new homes, but nada for the good guys. Understand that the Dline could be decimated, or not, depending on who elects the NFL. OL folk could return 4 starters, or 3 depending, and I don't think Frye has developed the 2's into 1's (at least Day doesn't believe so), so how does the weakest link get fixed? Dunno, but don't see the effort from football leadership. Not second guessing, but first guessing, I guess. Go Bucks - anyway and always.

I'm not overly stressing about the strategy as I would imagine this will put us in a position in April to be more aggressive. That's also when you'd expect some guys from Georgia, Bama, etc. to hit the portal and give us time to see how some of the young guys develop over the winter/spring.

That could work out for us and obviously fingers crossed it does, but I see it as a big risk at OL and DL unless the staff is positive what D Jackson does on OL and JT/Sawyer/Jackson/Hall/Tyleik/Hamilton do on DL...also coupled with the swings and misses at OL/DL in the recent cycles, we could be in real trouble next year at DL and looking past next season, we need some portal players at those positions regardless.

There are some good OL/DL in the portal that we either are not pursuing hard, or just are not getting visits from in this cycle...my problem is we know we need at least one high quality OL, DE and DT in this class, so no point waiting on those spots. If we got the MSU DT then I would feel a bit better, but we do need at least one more DE and OL of that ilk. Really it is the DL that has me concerned more than anything at this point in terms of the portal because I think we will have to hit the portal to make up for recruiting woes there.

For sure, it's a gamble to wait - but I do think the quality will be higher in April, while the quantity is higher now. There wasn't much on the edge market that seemed our standard outside of Princely Umanmielen, but he seemed destined to stay in the SEC.

Speaking of....Ole Miss is loading up from the portal on the defensive side, interested to see how it plays out.
