tOSU's BCS Bowl possibilities

Wow looking on ESPN this evening and seeing Ohio State predicted to play in the Fiesta bowl just blew my mind. They say we'll either play Oklahoma or Texas. Let's hope I get to go because every Ohio State game I've been to we have won. Also if we lose everyone is going to be complaining so much. Saying "Thats why the Big Ten doesn't deserve two BCS game!", "OSU is garbage", etc., etc. Nothing we haven't heard before.

Best bowl opponents

It looks more and more like Ohio State is going to play either Texas or Missouri in the Fiesta Bowl. I detailed it today in the Dispatch, so I won't get into the nitty-gritty of that process here.
I wanted to throw out a few random thoughts and observations about the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference teams that Ohio State might end up playing.
-- First of all, once again we have Exhibit A of how conference-title games can both help and hurt a conference. Yes, the SEC's title game probably made the difference between Florida and LSU getting into the national-title game the past few years -- those teams had a final chance to make a good impression and climb into the top 2.
But look at the Big 12 and tell me how the title game is helping that league (other than financially, of course).....the two top teams in the league are Oklahoma and Texas, but Oklahoma now runs the risk of being upset by Missouri and then it would drop all the way out of the BCS mix, into the Cotton Bowl.

I like our chances if we draw Mizzoo. Daniels is a nifty QB and Mizzoo plays an interesting offense, but I think OSU beats them by 20.

Texas, a pissed off Texas -- and doubly pissed off because a team they beat at a Neutral Site gets a shot at the brass ring while they have to play a team that won't vault them into the post bowl NC conversation -- is another matter.

If I were a long horn fan I'd want a shot at USC and a chance to prove the 'horns belonged in the NC game.

Unfortunately for Texas, their only shot at playing USC is if the Trojans lose to UCLA this week, putting Oregon State back into the Rose. And beating a USC team that just lost to UCLA shouldn't impress many voters.

But there is a groundswell out there now about AP voters having the ablity to vote Texas #1 after the bowls, if Oklahoma wins out. I don't think too many voters will make a Texas team that just defeated tOSU #1 over an Oklahoma team that's the Big 12 Conference Champion and just defeated Florida or Alabama.

But BCS haters and those trying to sell newspapers and magazines in the state of Texas are raising the topic. It will be interesting to see how the Fiesta Bowl markets the game, especially if the title game is Oklahoma-Florida, so there are no BCS undefeated teams left.

Would it put Oregon State back in the Rose though? It would be a 3-way tie between Oregon, Oregon State, and USC. What's the tiebreaker?

It would. First tie-breaker is record against #4 team, Cal. Oregon lost to Cal, so they are eliminated from consideration. After that, head-to-head prevails and Oregon State wins the tie-breaker over USC.

No and that's the Big 12's 5th tie-breaker.

According to the article I just posted, the Big 12 does:

1) Head to head among tied teams
2) Record against teams within the same division
3) Results vs opponents within the same division with the best record, repeated through the team with the worse record.
4) Common conference opponents
5) BCS Standings

edit - it was in the USC-UCLA vBet thread, but it was yesterday, not a 'couple of days ago'. Bkb's right, I need to do more research before I post.

Ohio State football: An Ohio State-Utah Fiesta Bowl?

The Fiesta Bowl has always been the most likely destination for Ohio State, but now a new opponent for the Buckeyes could enter the picture.
Ohio State vs. Utah anyone?

BuckeyeGrove.com, the Rivals site that covers Ohio State, is reporting that possibility today, and I talked enough to the guys there to understand how it could happen.

The BCS and FOX would be making an effort to create not only a national title game but almost an undercard for the national title game by matching up presumably the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the BCS, Texas and the SEC title game loser, in the Sugar Bowl.

That would be taking a Big 12 team out of the Fiesta, where Texas has been assumed as a sure thing if Oklahoma beats Missouri in the Big 12 title game and goes on to the BCS National Championship against the SEC champion, either Florida or Alabama.

Well, they are obviously a step up from our final regular season opponent this year :biggrin:...and since we aren't in the Title Game or the Rose Bowl, I'll gladly take a W over an undefeated team (sure, less glamorous than a win over the SEC) as a stepping stone towards next year.
