Transitioning to New Meyer Based Systems

BrianO

OSU Grad in FL
Living in FL for the last 12 years I had a fair amount of exposure of the transition from Spurrier to Zook and finally to Meyer. Using this history plus the records at BGSU and Utah, I am trying to project how long it will take to transition to a Meyer team.

Here are my assertions:
  1. He has demonstrated at several stops the ability to take talent as is and get them to step up their game. One would expect a better record year 1. I think this is why we are so optimistic from the start.
  2. Installing the offense takes time, feeling here was at FL it took a season and a half to normalize and hit an uptrend with year 3 hitting its stride. How much of this was Tebow is an ongoing debate.
  3. Special teams were more aggressive, more punt blocks called, and more wrinkles overall in the kicking game. He was a detailed task master in this area.
My questions for the more educated:
  • Do the players have a new offensive playbook to study at this point?
  • Fickell will call the defense, are we to assume the same general system as last year, terminology, etc?
  • What are your expectations for the Spring game? I assume with Luke staying as DC we will have continuity on defense and the defense will look good in this game compared with an offense that will have very limited practice time with an entirely new system.
  • How much more of the system will be installed by game 1, end of year one etc.
  • Meyer took over a FL team in 2005 without a sophomore dual treat QB how much will this shorten the transition to the new offense?
It is going to be interesting?

I would think that due to the success of his offense, it has become more popular, so OSU's offensive players might have some more familiarity with his system than Florida players did initially. That is the extent of my expertise.

EDIT: Lists are obnoxious if one has no idea how to use them and only wants to pull out one of the points in the list.

I would be inclined to think that the offensive players have at least an tiny inkling. There were at least a few things in the base package on O out of the shotgun (most notably the zone read stuff) that has to be part of Meyer's system
