Wanted: Elder care Attorney in Columbus

This space left intentionally blank
Does anyone here know of a good "elder care" attorney in Columbus?

Living in NC, I am not able to do the "word of mouth" research for my mother in Columbus, but I figure a number of people on this board have had to deal with aging parents needing special care.

I asked my accountant here for advice on the best way to set up some new living arrangements for my mother who has very little assets and virtually no income (just a small SS payment). She cannot afford to live in her current house and probably shouldn't live by herself for a number of reasons.

His recommendation was to find an elder care attorney who might be able to help her get assistance. Does anyone here have any experience with this or have any other advice? She has virtually no equity in her house and next to no income, so I don't need an attorney to ensure she doesn't lose assets, etc. it's more to make sure she's getting all the assistance she is eligible for.

Thanks, and we now return you to your regularly scheduled Tibor-bashing,

Most attorneys want to make sure they get paid, so if they find out she doesn't have much money, they might not want to take her on. (I assume that she's getting things like Medicare/Medicaid and not paying for her own health insurance?).

Have you considered contacting the law schools in the area, OSU and Capital, to see if they have any kind of public assistance program? I'm sure the area has some kind of legal aid clinic.

Sorry this isn't much help. If I knew the name of an elder law attorney there, I would have given it to you.

Good point. Actually, I'd be paying for the attorney if that makes a difference to any of you legal-types on the board. :wink2:

She "makes" just a little too much right now to qualify for Medicare/-aid via a small divorce settlement, but that money stops in 1 year, which is what we're trying to plan for.

I will try contacting the law schools though... that's a good idea. I kind of feel like I'm flying blind here, which is why I want the lawyer, but having dealt with some bad attorneys in the past I realize you have to be pretty careful when selecting the right representation.

Thanks.

BuckeyeInTheBoro,

I can't personally help you because unfortunately I don't practice in the state, however, if you click on this link I did do a search for elder law attorneys in the Columbus area on martindale.com. This is a directory/database that has just about every attorney in the nation in it. You can click on the attorney's name and you can see all of their information (how long they've been practicing, contact information, webpage, etc.). Pay attention to the Peer Rating, CV, BV, & AV, as this is how other attorneys have rated this particular attorney. Hope that this helps.

Based on your statement, I think you will need more of a home care service or a institution for the elderly...
