To me it's simple. Worst case scenario, we move up to #5 after one of Iowa/MSU loses. One of Clemson or Bama loses, we're in. Nobody could/should leapfrog us now after the game today. ND and Baylor going down were tremendous and we just need one more upset. I realize either scenario would be a huge upset but hey...we are not out yet!

And after reading other posts, I just LOL'ed at thinking UNC gets in over us if they win. They'd have to pull a 60-0 thrashing to get that and that's not going to happen.

I honestly don't think UNC would be that big of an upset. They were a couple plays away from being undefeated this year. The only thing that worries me, is that UNC will make a huge jump for beating #1, and make it in.

So, go (I really don't want to do this...) Gators...

Trust me, I want Bama to go down. The SEC without a team in the playoffs would make this year worth it even if we weren't in it.

But most of America just remembered UNC was even in the top 25. It's not like they have any sort of lofty resume. I could be wrong but if the ACC wants a team in, their only shot is Clemson.

I agree. The more I think about it, UNC's biggest knock won't be losing to South Carolina in week 1 (I think they get a pass, similar to Ohio State losing to Va Tech early on), it will be the fact that they played two FCS teams this season. That alone should disqualify them even if they do beat Clemson.. Sure, that would not only be completely overlooked in the SEC, but they would be sitting in the Top 3 right now if they were in the SEC...

The media bias is so forgetful of non conference opponents when it comes to the SEC. But Toledo! And BGSU! MACtion!

Exactly, put on Tar Heel blue for the limited purposes of this game :) The only crazier thing than allowing two Big Ten teams in the playoffs is to allow a non-top 10 ACC team in.

I was a bandwagon Tar Heel bball fan back in 05, when they were loaded with talent. They were my only hope for stopping that obnoxious Illinois team when it came to the Tourney. They finished what Ohio State started that year. It's time for them to return the favor.

Stanford could leapfrog us even before the committee takes the Conf champion thing into account. We need help from USC and either UNC or Florida

I'm just not seeing it. Had they convincingly beaten Notre Dame, I'd buy in a bit more. But there's no ignoring the two glaring losses they have this season. Northwestern is ranked, yes... But they did so by having the advantage of not playing MSU and Ohio State, and got their doors blown off by Iowa 40-10. And Oregon is ranked (I believe), but outside their loss to MSU, their losses are pretty embarrassing by their standards of late. A 42 point beat down of a team that fell apart in Utah, and a OT shootout loss to Washington St. That being said, I can't see Stanford jumping Ohio State going into championship week, and their Championship game will be against a team that will be lucky to crack the top 25. They will need to completely dismantle USC, and I'm not seeing it. They managed a 10 point victory when SC was a circus. Now SC has settled down a bit, and gotten back to playing pretty decently.

Since we are just talking, I'd love to see UF somehow just magically unfuck themselves for about 4 hours and stun Bama.
Yeah, thought warmly about that for a few moments, but I concluded the likelihood in practice was equal to that of all the guys who wanted to have Zeek's babies yesterday.

I agree with your posts elsewhere that Florida absolutely sucks and so does that entire SEC division. They needed a bloody prayer to get by a lower division team for goodness sakes, now they get hosed at home.

ESPiN still talking about how their NC champs hopes were crushed. Laughing out loud. Pathetic.

I think we're out and it's a damn shame, but I will share your dream.

Buckeyes had a good year but lost to Mich. St. and are playing a good game on New Years day. I'm fine with it. We won the first playoff and will be right back in it next year.

North Carolina deserves a slot if they beat Clemson. That's a play in game. Alabama (hate them) should roll Florida. Oklahoma clinched. Iowa-Mich St. winner is in. It's cut and dry, IMO.

UNC won't even fill their allotment of tickets.... UNC is not going in over us. If TCU/Baylor got the shift against us last year what the fuck you think is happening to UNC?

The difference was that OSU was the Big Ten champ last year when given the nod over TCU/Baylor, and won't be this year when addressing the OSU/UNC question. Look, I'd like nothing more than to be wrong on this, but I think in that room the concept will prevail that a one-loss conference champ has to get the nod over a one-loss non-conference champ. The people on the committee won't be thinking in the isolated case of OSU/UNC; rather, they'll be thinking, "Am I setting a precedent here, and potentially screwing my conference in the future by suggesting it's OK to let in an SEC team that doesn't even make the SEC Championship Game over a conference champ from my conference?"

Selection Committee Protocols

  1. Mission. The committee’s task will be to select the best teams, rank the teams for inclusion in the playoff and selected other bowl games and then assign the teams to sites.

It's not designed to give auto bids to power 5 conference champs but instead to get the four best teams (subjective to their opinions) at that time.

In rule 10 they specifically call out consolation Bowls for "displaced conference champions".

I think we get better insight on Tuesday night about how they intend to position UNC in case of a possible upset. Currently 14th, let's see how many of this weekends losers stay ahead of them.

It feels exactly like last year with the B12 to me, committee has all the leeway they want to do whatever they want to get the 4 "best teams" and you will never convince me that brand name/tv ratings and $ don't play into it.

If UNC knocks off Clemson and gets in ahead of an at large 1 loss OSU then I'm wrong but I don't think I am.
