What's wrong with my screen?

Here's a picture of my mom's laptop screen.

She was having problems with the screen turning off whenever she would move the lid while it was on....so she took it to the local computer place and the guy said they didn't have a part he thought she needed, but they had one similar so he tried that.

This is the result. It starts out a little discolored over the clock, and eventually just turns black/orange/red and it's hot as shit. If you touch it for longer than a second it burns your finger. If you press on it with a magazine or something you can smoosh whatever the black stuff is down into the corner, but it eventually bleeds back out. It's never gotten bigger than that.

It's just a junker from Dell, so she doesn't care if it's ruined or not, I was just wondering if anybody knows what the hell is going on with it.

Looks/sounds like he may have ruined your screen...esp if its really really hot to the point of burning. I have never seen that but it looks like the screen's lcd in that area may be shot.

It's probably a slow fission reaction involving rare earth phosphors contained in the display. The heat is simply a result of stray neutron emissions.

Not a problem unless your mom wants more kids. Or unless there's anybody real important who lives in the same town she does. Or within about a 250-mile radius. Otherwise don't worry about it.
