Why SEC Isn't As Great In Football As You Think - Chuck Thompson

On a per team basis, SEC teams only have 1-2 more players drafted than Big Ten teams do. And considering how many more they oversign than the Big Ten, that really isn't that many.

That said, their recent national championships are undeniable. There are plenty of excuses (Colt McCoy injured, LSU Bama rematch, Troy Smith and the OL taking December off, etc etc) but until someone else wins the title we can't complain.

i turned on paul lipbaum on my way home from work today and heard this guy who wrote the book on the show and it was the funniest thing ive heard in awhile...everyone who called in called the guy who wrote this book a racist...and if they werent calling him a racist they were arguing that the SEC is the best in the world of football of all time because of the simple fact that this guy is stupid...besides the past 6 years the SEC has dominated i did not hear one good argument to go against this guy...if i can find audio i will post

I always wonder how an individual SEC team fan base would feel about the jerk circle if it were their team alone that had won 5 or 6 of the NCs.

i don't like the circle jerk, and my team has only won 1 of the 6 (2 of the 7 this decade).

Ole Piss, Miss St, freaking Kentucky. got no business chanting SEC, SEC!

pretty sure Vandy fans are chanting ACT!, but there ain't enough of them to actually hear what they saying.

it pisses me off to no end when I hear alleged LSU fans say they were pulling for Auburn against Oregon a couple seasons ago.

What kind of shyt is that?!!?
they also pulled for Bama against Texas.

screw that!!

there ain't a single good reason to EVER pull for Bama, Auburn, Florida, etc. unless them winning directly benefits LSU (as in tie breaker type stuff).

screw every one of those redneck teams and their fanbases.

go ahead and lump them queers in College Station too.
they already starting that chant shit, and they haven't played their 1st damn game yet.

A decade ago, it would take Nebraska five years to lose 4 games.

I like the article, but I think there are factors beyond ESPN and the BCS that make it easier to win the MNC in the SEC. i.e. weather, hometown bowl games, and oversigning to name a few.

Not to mention social factors too. More specifically, demographic shift. The population of Southern States is much greater than it was in 1975. I would imagine this plays a big factor.

Another social factor is the importance of football in the South.

Before all of my Buckeye brethren jump on me for that, Ohio loves football every bit as much as any State in the South. But does any other Big Ten State? I've lived in 8 different States, and my opinion is no, not even Pennsylvania or Michigan.

I've lived in Oh, Al, and now Pa. Al was by far the by far the most enthusiastic for high school and college football. Having two huge rival schools in the same state makes the 'Bama/Auburn rivalry more of a year round all out hate fest.

PA is much more into the NFL (go figure) and high school football is really huge here (I'm in western PA).

Ohio is more balanced between high school, college and NFL fans.

(this is all in my limited experience, not FACT)

The pro game isn't as big down here as in other places.
For starters, we only have a handful of pro teams in the sec footprint (prior to this years expansion)
3 in Florida
1 each in LA, Georgia, Tenn

The Big Ten has them in
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Illinois
Indiana
Michigan
2 in Ohio
2 in Penn

So those schools are all battling for attention with pro-teams in their own state.
Not so much down here.

We only have 1 long standing MLB team in the footprint as well.
The NBA has only moved in within the last 20 years or so.
Throw in the fact that other than the dolphins, our pro teams aren't nearly as old as those up north.

Lots of SEC fans can easily remember a time when the Saints, Falcons, Bucs, Jags didn't even exist. And it wasn't long ago the Titans were in Houston rather than SEC territory.

So for generations, our colleges were our only source for sports in general.
So that devotion to our college teams is usually deeper, just because there was simply no competition for our loyalty.

That loyalty gets passed down from fathers to sons, and just keeps growing.

Just looked it up.

There was not a single pro sports team In the SEC footprint until '66.

The big ten footprint on the other hand has been having pro teams since 1876 in baseball, 1920 in football, and 1949 in basketball.

So despite having five pro teams for a long time, Ohio still supports the Buckeyes just as well as any SEC school. Pretty impresive.
