WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion)

URBAN MEYER'S GOAL IS FOR BRAXTON MILLER TO START AT H-BACK IN OHIO STATE'S OPENER AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH

When Urban Meyer was asked at Big Ten Media Days in July what his realistic expectations were for Braxton Miller at his new position for the upcoming season, the Ohio State head coach set the bar quite high.

"For the average guy, I'd say it would be very uncommon to [contribute] at least right out of the gate," Meyer said. "He's not common, though. My expectation is that he's an impact player."

It doesn't look like much has changed in the three weeks since.

The Buckeyes wrapped up fall training camp Saturday morning at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and when Meyer was asked again about Miller's expectations for an immediate impact at H-back — more specifically, if he was capable of starting at the position in Week 1 against Virginia Tech — he reaffirmed what was said three weeks prior in Chicago.

"My plan is to try and get him ready to do that," Meyer said. "He's getting close."

2015 SEASON PREVIEW: BRAXTON MILLER'S FINAL SEASON AT OHIO STATE SET TO BEGIN WITH NEW NUMBER, POSITION

It's hard to put into words exactly what the last 12 months have been like for Braxton Miller.

Once the face of Ohio State's program, a three-year starter at quarterback and a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year, Miller was basically unheard from throughout the Buckeyes' run to the national championship during the 2014 campaign after he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury just 12 days before the year began.

He made appearances on the sidelines and in the press box at games, but he never said anything publicly, to anyone. Not about how his rehab was going, not about the emergence of J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones in his place and certainly not about the transfer rumors that swirled around him throughout the entire offseason.

For 12 months, it was nothing but silence and the man who was once the most popular player in Columbus took a backseat to Barrett and Jones as they led the Buckeyes to a national title.

That finally changed, though, and the silence was broken on July 9 when Miller spoke publicly for the first time since his injury and revealed to the Columbus Dispatch he was, in fact, returning to Ohio State for his final season.

But the rollercoaster for Miller didn't come to an end there.
.
.
.
But Meyer expects Miller will be an impact player and Miller certainly won't shy away from those expectations.

"I just want to be the best player," Miller said. "Whatever I do on the field, I just want to be the best at it.”

Speaking of special teams, it is looking more and more likely that Braxton Miller will be returning punts for Ohio State when they take the field at night in Blacksburg, Virginia.

What kind of punt returner could he be?

"I think he can be incredibly dangerous," Coombs said. "If you give a great athlete space — and that’s the job of everybody else — I think it’s an area that we’ve worked really hard on this summer and we’d like to see some dynamic things out of the return game, and I think we certainly have the guys to do that. Braxton, you’ve got to go tackle him one-on-one in the open field, you better strap it on."

Of our guys last year that had over 100 yards, only 3/9 will be playing week 1, and one of those 3 is zeke. Leaves us with Thomas and Vannett. Perhaps Samuel will move to WR for at least this game.

Bottom line: I think this game is on Brax....again. He's put the team on his shoulders and won us so many games over the years. He doesn't need to put the team on his shoulders, but we need someone to put on the burners and make some big plays, and I think Brax is it. Otherwise they load the box, play tight to the LOS and put everything into stopping Zeke.

You have potential 1st/2nd rounders at WR and RB (and who knows, maybe QB?), along with proven TE and backup RBs/WRs that would laugh at the offers most of the VT team received. And the game is on the shoulders of a guy who didn't play last year?

I definitely think Braxton will line up at QB or Wildcat or whatever you want to call it, the only player in the backfield when we get inside the 10, first and goal from say the 5. Empty backfield, 5 wide, Braxton in the shotgun. I am betting on that one.
