I'm not sure whether that was in response to my post, but if so.....Tressel was the OSU coach when Watson committed (for the 2002 class). For that matter, Jay Minton was the HC for Wayne then, as he is now.

JT was a brand new coach at that time. He hadn't established his fingerprints on to what the OSU program is all about right now.

So I would agree that the OSU program now is more than slightly different than the one at the turn of this century.

Wayne's Ashton Watson committed to MSU over an OSU offer back in 2001, so it would hardly be without precedent.

Yep, legitimate point. Jeff Backes also chose NW over OSU the year before. But since Tressel has established himself after that season he's rarely lost anyone from these OSU friendly programs.

And Michigan beat out OSU for Burgess and Crable in 03. In the last 5 years, UM has beaten OSU twice (IIRC) for Ohioans, and both of those individuals were wolverines before Tressel was hired.

Burgess and Crable would have gone up north regardless of the amount of time Tressel was coach- Burgess because of the Clarett/girlfriend situation and Crable because he was, well, Crable. Certainly Tressel has made it far more difficult for um to come south and compete for recruits (and made it darned near impossible for PSU). It's a nice change from prior regimes. BTW, I think that's three Ohioans that they beat OSU for (Turner, Koger, and Omameh).

And yeah, the program is definitely different, but as we all know, anything can happen with recruiting. I just don't agree that any Ohioan is a lock simply because he comes from a "feeder program". Every recruit is a unique recruiting situation.

I don't know if I would consider OSU as a 'loser' in the race for Omameh...the Bucks really just jumped in at the last second. Now, Hagerup....OSU did truly want him and you have to give Rod credit for winning that battle.

....now back to Brax

Um, Hagerup is from Wisconsin.

And at UM the punter is an outgoing senior who might have been the team's MVP...pretty rare to find a DI program where the punter is the big man on campus....know what I mean?

Sorry for the side bar.... back to Braxton.. if he is coming I sure hope he announces early and works the other recruits. He is a key cog in keeping things rolling in Cbus and has an opportunity to help build one of the best recruiting classes we have seen since the scholarship limits given the talent in Ohio and our new found national credibility in the wake of the Rose Bowl win. I know we have some other QBs on the roster.... but Braxton has an opportunity to continue the OSU run

Notre Dame coach seeks out area star on signing day
By Kyle Nagel | Wednesday, February 3, 2010

On arguably the most important day for Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly since taking the job in South Bend, he?s seeking out one of the area?s top football talents.

Maneuvering through his first signing day as coach, Kelly found time to schedule a phone conversation with Wayne High School junior quarterback Braxton Miller today, Feb. 3, said Wayne coach Jay Minton. Miller is considered by many to be the state?s top recruit in the Class of 2011.

Miller was supposed to make contact with Kelly today as many of the country?s top programs continue to come after him.

Kelly is busy enough trying to impress Notre Dame fans and media with his first recruiting class as head coach, but that doesn?t mean he?s not looking toward the future. Miller seems to be on Kelly?s mind as a possibility for that future.
