COLUMBUS ? The time is now for Chris Fields to step up for the Ohio State football team.

So says the third-year receiver from Harvey.

A redshirt sophomore, Fields is listed as the back-up to starter Corey ?Philly? Brown at one wide receiver spot, opposite starter Verlon Reed. But the 6-foot, 188-pounder, with only three career receptions to his name, is expected to be in the slot when the Buckeyes go into three-receiver sets.

Saturday?s noon kickoff against Akron in the season-opener for both schools couldn?t get here fast enough for Fields.

?Yeah, man, it?s been a long couple years,? Fields said. ?I learned a lot and I got bigger physically, so it?s time for me to shine. I?m ready.?

Ohio State football: Harvey grad Fields makes most of chance (with two videos)

COLUMBUS ? The Toledo Rockets' strategy was to play keep-away with Chris Fields.

The Ohio State punt returner seemed to be getting frustrated when the Rockets kept punting the ball out of bounds.

Late in the second quarter of the Buckeyes' edge-of-your-seat 27-22 victory over the Rockets, their scheme backfired.

Fields, a redshirt sophomore from Harvey High School, fielded a low, line-drive punt at the 31-yard line and took it to the house with 46 seconds left in the first half. His 69-yard punt return was the first touchdown of his collegiate career.

Once he got to the end zone, he said he was a bit overcome with emotion.

"Actually, I was in tears," Fields said. "I was living the dream. It was great to finally see myself in the end zone."
