WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

There is no chance that he won't be invited to camp with somebody. Like you say, he has the intangibles - and the hands - to become a great possession
receiver in the NFL. Somebody will be getting a steal. I hope he goes to New England as a free agent.

Our version of Dane is Chaz Henry. Somebody will wind up letting him kick in camp, and once they let him in the door, he ain't leaving without a punter's job.

Yes, New England would be a perfect fit. Regardless of his NFL potential, he's going to be successful at something. He's too damn intelligent and persistent not to.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher watched five of his Buckeyes teammates get picked in the NFL draft, but did not see his name come up. Now, the waiting game continues for the former Central Catholic star.

In a normal year, Sanzenbacher would likely have heard from a number of teams by now and been able to choose a free agent offer from the bunch. But since the NFL and its players are locking horns in a contentious labor conflict, the immediate future is very uncertain. There will be no undrafted free agents signed until the dispute is resolved.

?That?s the sad thing about this whole situation ? not being drafted wouldn?t be that big of a deal if the lockout wasn?t in place,? said Greg Dempsey, Sanzenbacher?s coach at Central where the 5-foot-11, 182-pound Sanzenbacher was a two-time City League player of the year.

Sanzenbacher, who more than a few labeled ?too small? to play at Ohio State when he signed with the Buckeyes during his senior year at Central Catholic, went from catching a touchdown pass the first time he touched the ball as a freshman to team MVP and first team All-Big Ten as a senior.

?Once this labor mess gets straightened out, I?m confident he?ll be on a roster someplace next season, and as a free agent he might be able to pick the best situation to go into,? Dempsey said. ?I know Dane is going to handle it OK, but it?s tough to see real quality players like him get stuck in the middle of this.?

Sanzenbacher, who was not available for comment Saturday night after the final round of the draft ended, had five teammates get drafted, and all of them were part of the Ohio State unit that led the Big Ten in scoring defense, total defense, and pass defense.

This seriously pisses me off. Fuck the NFL. Greedy self serving racist bastards.

That's a bit much.

He was probably seen as a limited upside, dime-a-dozen player. We all know that's total fucking bullshit, but that's the only thing I can think of.

It's not racism, that's kind of absurd. There aren't 30 teams unwilling to draft a white dude just because he's white. There was clearly something that didn't intrigue them, as much as it doesn't make sense.

dang, almost anywhere would be a good fit for this guy. How can anyone watch the freaking rose Bowl against "speedy Oregon" and watch Sanzo catch (i may be wrong with the numbers) something like 9 passes, and 6 or 7 were for first downs. That's f"kkin MONEY.

I am biased but really don't see many weaknesses with Dane, and if there were any, you could compensate for them with a great freaking pair of hands.

What good does it do to be 6'4" and fast if you drop easy catches (ever hear of Braylon Edwards?)??

I would bet anyone that he will be on an NFL roster by the END of next season.

Four touchdowns in one game?? Obviously this kid has no talent!

Well that depends on how you define racism. See I am of the opinion that it was racist to have separate drinking fountains and bathrooms for whites and blacks during the Jim Crow era. But to some that is just segregation.

But whatever you call it, there is definite discrimination involved. A WR prospect is thought to be, in general, more of a prospect, if he is African-American. And that is just the sad truth.

The bottom line is that, if Dane were black, he'd have been drafted - and likely in the early rounds.

the biggest factor I haven't seen mentioned much, is the high number of concussions he's already had.

Dane is a very similar player to Austin Collie, who may be out of the league on his next hit to the head. Dane has had multiple concussions at tOSU...so you're not only taking a bit of flier on Dane, but you're also accepting the risk of a few big hits and Dane not being cleared to play.

And Dane's role in the NFL would be to work the middle of the field.

As disappointing not getting drafted is for Dane, ultimately it's better to go undrafted than to be drafted late, as far as a career move. He can now likely pick his team and his situation; given Dane's intelligence I'm sure he'll make a great choice and this may be a blessing in disguise.

Exactly... A Green Bay Packer team may be looking for a SURE HANDED slot receiver... Nothing like joining the reigning Super Bowl Champs!

Normally I would completely agree, but this year I don't know if that's going to end up being the case. With the uncertainty of the lockout and the definite delay in signing UDFA because of the lockout, it could be difficult for UDFA to make the necessary splashes in fall camps to make the teams.

I don't think it's a race issue at all. I should've just said that. Thinking every team in the NFL discriminated against a player because of his skin color is ridiculous, in my opinion. A few teams, maybe.. but even then.. the entire league? No.

I had not thought of that, but it is a very good point, now that the league is paying more attention to the brain injury issue.
