WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Just watching the Hard Knocks episode now, love seeing John Gruden get all excited about Dane. For those who don't watch it, John was sitting down with Marvin Lewis, Jay Gruden and a handful of other Coaches and Jay brought up Dane, and John got excited talking about him.

Made me laugh the other night when John said something to the effect of "I should be his agent..."

He's a big fan of Dane. That'd be a pretty cool thing to be able to say... "yeah... Gruden is one of my biggest fans..." LOL

Ex-Bears WR Sanzenbacher returning with Bengals

  • 580x386

    By Rich Campbell, Tribune reporter
    September 5, 2013

Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher found a home with the Cincinnati Bengals after the Chicago Bears waived him last Christmas Eve. The Bengals claimed him the next day and he made their 53-man roster last week, setting up his return to Soldier Field for Sunday's season opener between the two teams.

"Everybody has their niche in the league, and that’s how I guess I’ll stick around.," said Sanzenbacher, who is 5-foot-11. "You have to take advantage of every opportunity."

The Bengals put 5-foot-7 slot receiver Andrew Hawkins (high ankle sprain) on injured reserve-designated to return and kept Sanzenbacher as one of six receivers. Sazenbacher's 100 preseason receiving yards led the team.

"He plays bigger than his size," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a teleconference Wednesday. "He’s a smart player. He understands football. He understands route concepts, and he understands leverage and movement away from leverage. He’s been what we expected.

Bengals catching on

The Bengals are on pace to join the 2011 Saints as only the second team in NFL history to have six players with 500 or more receiving yards in a season.

Dane Sanzenbacher

When the Bengals displayed just how deep and versatile they are catching the ball Sunday in Buffalo you could have sworn James Brooks came out of 1988 to catch a swing pass while helping block Bruce Smith.

That's about how historic it is becoming.

Among quarterback Andy Dalton's 40 passes on Sunday, 26 were completed to eight different players and to all five wide receivers that were active. And one of them, Dane Sanzenbacher, came off the bench cold for his first snap of the game with 4:46 left in the third quarter on fourth-and-15 to do something the Bengals hadn't done in this century.

Based on 16-game projections, the Bengals are on pace to join the 2011 Saints as only the second team in NFL history to have six players with 500 or more receiving yards in a season.

"It's pretty cool. We've been saying since the preseason that we know how talented we are at receiver and now it's finally showing," Sanzenbacher said.

To show what the Bengals think of Sanzenbacher, they put him in the slot on the fourth-and-long, replacing
Mohamed Sanu, and he showed why when he made a one-handed catch with the other one pinned as he went down the seam for a 23-yard play in a crowd that included safety Jim Leonhard pondering decapitation.

It was the first time since quarterback Jeff Blake ran on fourth-and-16 in Seattle in 1999 that the Bengals converted a fourth down that long.

No one practices a fourth-and-15 during the week, but Sanzenbacher ran that play in practice on Thursday well enough that the Bengals put him inside outside receivers A.J. Green and Marvin Jones and he came up with his second catch of the season.

"I like Dane on a lot of routes; he's a good player," said wide receivers coach James Urban.

Except for his first two years in the NFL in Chicago, the 5-11, 184-pound Sanzenbacher is Ohio all the way. A two-time player of the year in Toledo before he became Ohio State's MVP as a senior, Sanzenbacher's hands are surer than a sellout at The Shoe. Maybe it wasn't Kirk Gibson coming off the bench to take Dennis Eckersley deep in the World Series (25 years ago to the day), but this bit of pinch-hitting advertised Sanzenbacher's toughness, brains and hands.

"It can be tough sometimes mentally to stay in the game when you're physically ready to go out there; it's part of your assignment," Sanzenbacher said. "For whatever reason, Urbs likes me on that route. We did practice it before and I was a little bit more familiar with it."

SANZENBACHER CHIPS IN: Toledo native Dane Sanzenbacher made only once catch but it was a big one, advancing Cincinnati seven yards on the initial play of its winning drive.

Sanzenbacher, the third-year pro and alumnus of Ohio State and Central Catholic, was active for the fifth week in a row. He played sparingly, appearing on special teams and on multiple-receiver formations.

“I just try to stay involved in the game,” said Sanzenbacher, who has three catches on the season. “I have a little bit of a role on special teams, which at least keeps my blood pumping and into it. As far as offense goes, I really have no idea what’s going to happen. When my number’s called I have no choice but to make that play.”

Bengals vs. Dolphins: Sanzenbacher to see more snaps if Sanu sits
By Josh Kirkendall @CincyJungle on Oct 29 2013

Starting wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is dealing with a shoulder that may force him to sit against the Miami Dolphins.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Mohamed Sanu sat during Tuesday's practice, the second time this week, dealing with a shoulder that forced him to miss the second half against the New York Jets. Per Bengals.com, if Sanu is unable to go, Marvin Jones will be promoted to the second wide receiver in two-wide sets with Dane Sanzenbacher seeing increased participation in the slot.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice that if Sanu can't go, wide receiver Marvin Jones would replace him in the two-receiver sets with Dane Sanzenbacher taking some of Sanu's reps in the slot.

Traditionally the Bengals have used A.J. Green and Sanu as the team's wide receivers in two-wide sets; over 40 percent of the team's formations are single-back with two receivers and two tight ends this year. When they move to a three-wide set, Jones often replaces Sanu, who moves into the slot -- but all three are pretty interchangeable in the slot, in terms of participation.

Sanzenbacher has caught a pass in three straight games and four of the past five, giving him five for 54 yards receiving on the season.

Resigned by the Bengals for a one-year contract. Article brings up a good point that with Hawkins to Cleveland, Sanz should see an increased role. The WRs coach said they will look to use him more as well. Even with my scarlet tinted glasses off, Dane flat out produces when he is on the field and I would love to see him get on the field more...I think he brings a whole new skill set to the field than Green, Jones, and Sanu.

Even if you don't like the Bengals, you better watch this team early on if you like Sanz...he is going to be a big time contributor here. Talk about an incredible pick-up. Always extra sweet when one of my favorite Buckeyes ends up balling out on my favorite professional team (which has not happened in my lifetime yet).

Class Act. When an eleven year old recently broke his arm playing football for Dane's grade school team, Dane sent him an autographed picture signed with "Get Well Soon Buddy" Dane too broke his arm playing football at OLPH elementary in Toledo. He never forgets his roots and the people/schools that helped him become the great player and person that he is. Go Bucks.
