OSU COMMIT EVAN SPENCER SAYS BEING A BUCKEYE IS A FAMILY AFFAIR
By Lee Hudnell

VERNON HILLS, Ill. ? When most high school football recruits decide on a college to attend most provide you with some cliche answer when asked why they chose a certain school.

That's certainly not the case for Vernon Hills (IL) star wide receiver Evan Spencer.

No, the Buckeye class of 2011 commit said choosing to play at Ohio State was simply a family affair.

"My family," Spencer told The Buckeye Times, when asked his biggest reason for choosing to play at Ohio State back in June. "When it came down to it they showed me that I needed to go home.

"I needed to be a Buckeye."

Signing day won't be snowed in
By Scott Powers
ESPNChicago.com

Vernon Hills football coach Tony Monken feels fortunate Notre Dame recruit DaVaris Daniels and Ohio State recruit Evan Spencer own fax machines.

With a major snowstorm arriving in the Midwest on the cusp of Wednesday's national signing day, Monken could have envisioned himself getting on a four-wheeler, maneuvering through the snowy streets of Vernon Hills, picking up letters of intent and locating fax machines to send them while their future coaches impatiently waited back in their offices.

Instead, Monken will be able to enjoy his likely day off from school at home, knowing his two prized players will be able to fax their letters of intent without any trouble.

"They're going to get up in the morning, and if school is called off, they're going to fax them at home," Monken said. "Everyone will have their faxes to them at 8 a.m. It kind of stinks because it's fun to have them sign at the same time and take the picture, but that's not going to happen."

I wondered who would be responsible for getting the LOIs FAXed in if school is cancelled.

Evan said the last thing his Dad (tOSU RB Tim) told him before he headed off to tOSU was "just go out there and play like you can".

He said DeVier is like another coach, especially since the past 5 weeks they haven't been able to practice with Coach Drayton watching,

Meet The Spencers
August 24, 2011

Spencers%20feature.jpg

You know Tim. He was a standout running back at Ohio State from 1979 to 1982, leading the Buckeyes in rushing his last two years. In fact, he left OSU with 3,553 rushing yards, which still ranks third all-time at the school.

Archie Griffin, of course, tops the list with 5,589. Second is Eddie George (3,768), who won the 1995 Heisman Trophy with none other than Tim Spencer as his position coach. He also tutored Maurice Clarett in 2002 and helped guide the Buckeyes to the national title.

In fact, Tim, now 50 years old, worked many years for both John Cooper and Jim Tressel in that role until leaving in 2004 to do the same for the Chicago Bears. Not surprisingly, he?s found great success in the new venture.

And the Windy City was home to the Spencers once before as the Chicago Blitz selected Tim second overall in the original USFL draft in 1983. After a starring role there, Tim went on to play with the Arizona Wranglers and Memphis Showboats before finally landing in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers in 1985, staying with that franchise until he retired in 1990.

You don?t know Gilda Spencer, but you need to know she is the glue to this family.

Gilda and Tim met at Ohio State and have been committed to each other ever since. Amazingly, Gilda has managed to carve out enough time for her vice president position at Nationwide Insurance and works out of her Columbus office three days a week when she is not running the Spencer household back in Vernon Hills, Ill., an idyllic North Shore suburb of Chicago that happens to be just minutes away from the Bears? practice facility.
