WR Ray Small (official thread)

There was a comment in the O Zone Columns and Features by Eric Lichter the new strength coach at OSU that Ray was alone as the only other person in the Ted Ginn speed class. Take it for what it is worth.

Thats huge because what we heard last year was Gonzo being the only other player able to keep up with Ginn in terms of speed. Small will see the field this year for sure (so long as his grades and work ethic stay firm).

I wouldn't be so sure that we see a lot of him this year. Tressel doesn't like to play freshman a whole lot until they get everything together(playbook, adjusting to college life, adjusting college classes etc). Plus we have some other very good young receivers in front of him Dukes, Hartline, Robiskie. Not to take anything way from him but it might be tough for him to see the field his freshman year all things considered. I'm not trying to be negative at all I have seen some of his highlights on the local news last football season and from reading all of his comments from Lichter and Ginn Sr. I am very excited to see what this kid can do.

Im thinking we see him in on the return team like they did with Jamo last year. Im sorry if it seemed like I meant he will play reciever. Like you said we are too deep to have him play reciever his frosh year.

With as much as JT values Special Teams and with the trickle down effect of losing Haw (i.e., say Haw was scheduled to be in on kickoff / punt returns, but do we really have the "extra" RB depth to use in that capacity now that he's transfered out) a year focusing on returns & easing into the PT spot light (while buckling down in the classroom) might be just the way to add Ray Small to the mix.

Just my speculation.

Lichter worked with Small before and thus is very familiar with him. I don't think he's as familiar with Gonzo yet. If papa Ginn says Gonzo is faster in the 40 than his son, and Teddy Jr. doesn't refute it, I'm guessing that Gonzo is indeed pretty damn fast.

Freshman Small named second-team receiver
Tuesday, August 29, 2006
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State revealed its twodeep roster yesterday, and there were no surprises among the starters, but there was a Small surprise among the second-teamers.
Freshman Ray Small was named second-team receiver behind Ted Ginn Jr., beating out sophomore Albert Dukes, whom many thought was Ginn-in-training.
Redshirt freshman kicker Aaron Pettrey had the more impressive showing in the kick scrimmage, so it wasn’t surprising to see him No. 1 ahead of sophomore Ryan Pretorius.
Two other first-year freshmen joining Small in the second-team column were linebackers Tyler Moeller and Ross Homan. They were both listed as backups to senior John Kerr on the weak side. Homan, who entered school last winter to get a head start, was bothered by a slightly pulled hamstring the past three weeks, and Moeller was in the mix all the way.
Freshman running back Chris "Beanie" Wells was listed as the co-second-teamer with sophomore Maurice Wells behind junior starter Antonio Pittman.
Vernon Gholston was listed ahead of fellow sophomore Alex Barrow at one of the defensive end spots, but defensive coordinator Jim Heacock had said earlier he hopes to play eight or more defensive linemen in the first several games.
Junior-college transfer Larry Grant was No. 2 behind James Laurinaitis at middle linebacker, with junior Curtis Terry behind Marcus Freeman at the other outside linebacker.
Also of note, Anderson Russell was No. 1 at nickel back, where Jamario O’Neal played some as a freshman last year. O’Neal was No. 2 at strong safety behind senior Brandon Mitchell.
