Browns' Terrelle Pryor attempting the near-impossible: Switching positions

The quarterback drama never really ends at Cleveland Browns training camp, but you have to admit, this year's slant is different. Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel look firmly locked in as the team’s starting and backup quarterbacks, respectively, and show no signs of trading places any time soon.

Instead, the role-switching in Cleveland involves an intriguing position change by Terrelle Pryor, the former Raiders starting quarterback who is attempting the ridiculously rare feat of turning himself into an NFL wide receiver—practically overnight. As of mid-June, Pryor was a quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, his fourth pro team, trying to secure a roster spot. Not even eight weeks later, he's across the Buckeye state in Cleveland’s camp, trying to learn the intricacies of the receiver position, and hoping to flash just enough potential to entice the receiver-needy Browns to find some way to use his supreme athleticism.

“Cincinnati released me, [and] they did me wrong I feel,” Pryor said. “Seattle released me, and I had a better preseason than their backup guy (Tarvaris Jackson). I was with Hue in Oakland, but it could have been out of his control [in Cincinnati]. The top guys were A.J. McCarron [supporters]. I saw he wasn’t even doing that well in camp this year. It’s funny how things like that happen, but at the end of the day, I’m here now and actually I love this place. I love this team, love the attitude, and we just need some guys who can come in here and who can make some plays.”

According to Pryor, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was contacted by “25 teams” after Pryor declared his willingness to play receiver. “I know Dallas was big in it,” he said. “I think the Patriots were on it. That’s where I thought I was going to end up going, because they called a lot, Dallas and New England.”

“I think it’s the first time ever that a starting quarterback became a receiver, an outside receiver,” Pryor said. “There’s some guys who did it coming out of college as a quarterback, but they were 5'10" to 6'0". I’m 6'5", I’ve run a 4.32, and I can jump over people. That’s fun in itself. And I’m competitive. I’ll block you. I’ll hit you. I’m going to do whatever I have to do. If I have to beat you up, whatever I’ve got to do to beat you.

“I know I’ve got to grow in some areas on the field in the receiver spot. I understand that, but I think with my athletic prowess and my competitiveness and my ability to catch the ball, I can help the Browns.”

I didn't read the whole article, but I don't think he really had an option. The Browns took him off waivers so he never hit the open market, but honestly would you rather go to a team with established WR's or the long line of suck the Browns have had at WR? Pryor making the Browns isn't a certainty so I can only imagine his chances on a better team. The Browns are more likely to keep him based on potential and let him grow.

The Browns definitely are not loaded with "established WRs"; Gordon is suspended (again), Bowe is past his prime, and anyone not from Ohio State or Miami FL probably never heard of Hartline:

Hamstring hampering Terrelle Pryor’s chances of making the Browns

As he attempted to transition from quarterback to wide receiver, Terrelle Pryor showed promise in his first few days of Browns training camp. And then a hamstring injury set in.

Now, coach Mike Pettine says, Pryor is going to struggle to make the team if he can’t soon get himself healthy enough to practice.

“That window narrows every day that he’s not out there,” Pettine said today, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

For a team with basically 0 star athletes, they are quick to get rid of by far their best athlete due to a minor injury. He has more upside than any of their receivers but needs time to get there, where most of the guys they will be keeping have hit their peak and that peak would make them a 3rd stringer on any other team. But let's not plan for a season or two down the road. I recall several teams were interested in Pryor at WR, he will probably do much better with a team that needs a #2 slot guy and has a real QB and a management team that makes an attempt at putting together a complete roster. I gave up on the browns a long time ago.

I doubt he would risk faking an injury to get released since no team with a better QB is going to be looking for a project WR after the season starts. This sounds more like lighting a fire than anything. He needs to get back for the game this week.

Winning with horse jockeys is not gonna happen

I understand trying to toughen guys up.. but there's a fine line with being stupid
Making thoroughbreds run thru injury has almost always resulted in destroying the horse

The Browns have brought stupidity to a new level. Cutting or keeping Pryor doesn't change shit. Pettine might be an idiot or he is lighting a fire. Coming back from injuries and how quickly you are on the mend HAVE to go into the decision to cut bait with a 6'5" athlete with speed and hops.

It just HAS to. At least put TP on the damn practice squad or something till he can get back to 90-95% health to prove himself.
