WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

The Ozone's Jeff Amey gives TP a rather harsh evaluation for the USC game. Let's limit the discussion regarding this article to QB play in this thread.

Ozone

As you probably already guessed, this is going to be one of the longer sections. Much of the problems we saw Saturday night were not personnel based, but this position is the exception. It's no secret that Terrelle Pryor played poorly against USC, but the question is why?

Some people seem to feel that he's regressed from last season. I don't agree with that. There are signs of progress from last season. In the first quarter, Pryor's mechanics were decent, better than anything we saw out him last season. He did a pretty good job of finding the open man, stepping into his throw and hitting his receivers for big gains, even with the interception on the third play of the game.

Beginning in the second quarter, however, things started to change. Pryor started hurrying his mechanics and throwing off his back foot. He looked unsure and hesitant in the running game, including a terrible pitch on an option play in the red zone. What happened to him?

I've touched on this in prior By the Numbers articles, but never thought it was going to be as pervasive of a problem as it obviously is now. Ohio State's star quarterback and the nation's top recruit going into the 2008 season really...REALLY doesn't like contact. To the point where he starts looking terrified of taking a hit. I'm not talking about someone getting a hand on him or anything like that. I'm talking about a full on football hit. You know...the kind that quarterbacks have to take sometimes in order to complete passes against blitzes.

I've thought this from the first time I saw him play in a Buckeye uniform, but I always thought it was going to be something he would get through after his freshman year. I know some of you reading this aren't going to believe this, or at least don't think that it's as big of a problem as I'm making it out to be, but take a little time to think about what you've seen out of Pryor since the beginning of last season. He's playing like a guy that's been able to run away from his problems on the football field...literally. I really think that's part of it. He's probably been that much better than everyone else on the field until he started playing at Ohio State.

...

Unless he's able to get past this problem, I don't think Pryor is going to be able to progress any further than where he is right now. It affects every phase of his game. Not every team is going to have the same kind of athletes on defense to successfully do what USC was able to do on Saturday, but I know we just watched the blueprint of how to defend OSU and Pryor this season. If nothing is done to address this, I think Pryor will go on looking pretty good against inferior opponents, but will fall flat on his face again against a defense with a pulse.

Grade--D The first quarter is the only thing that keeps this from being a complete fail. There's a world of potential in Pryor, but he has to be the one that realizes it.

Cont'd ...

You just made my argument for me. Texas ran a very simple zone-read scheme. They called a run play or a pass play, read the defensive end, either handed the ball to Jamaal Charles, or faked it and let Vince run, or they rolled him out and he made David Thomas look like the best college TE of all time.

And I'm over-simplifying, but what you said stands. They ran a simple offense, and let Vince's athletic ability carry the squad. If they asked Vince to go through progressions and hang in the pocket, and scramble with his head up, Texas doesn't win the championship. Again, I think it goes back to selling Terrelle on becoming an NFL QB, and trying to deliver on that promise. All things being equal, I think our offense would look drastically different, if the NFL wasn't Terrelle's next step...it'd be about winning now, with an offense that utilizes his best asset.

good grief. A) USC sold out to stop Terrelle from running. and B) VINCE YOUNG WAS IN HIS 3RD YEAR BEFORE HE DID ANYTHING.

I think the article makes a lot of good points. Pretty brash to call into question a players fortitude but looking back at some key plays in past games he may have a point. He has shown the tendancy to freak out when the other team is able to get a good rush and there have been several times in big games if he is willing to take a hit running he picks up a critical third down.

Its going to be hilarious at the end of the year when we as fans, and the media look back to this USC game and see how much TP has grown by the end of the year. People are forgetting that this kid is only a TRUE SOPH! The media is annointing Forcier to be the next coming of Tebow, Peyton Manning and John Elway all in one because of one game, and they're destroying TP for only one game, lol! Like has been stated before, TP as a true Soph is at the same level that Troy Smith was his RS Junior year, just think about that! He's already playing ahead of the curve! And I would honestly love to play that USC team again if thats the best they can offer! They didn't show me much in terms of being that much better than us, they just executed at the right times. TP's gonna be a star, and this USC game will be all forgotten by the time we roll into State Penn and trounce PSU! I still see us a BCS caliber team, and I'd love to see USC again in the Rose Bowl

Yes, my Lord, the media's slurping treatment of the Tater. They are rapidly converging on Tebowesque in their mancrush on him.

Tater has only played 2 friggin' games, against a MAC team and Fat Charlie's team (who run around like the ending credits from the Benny Hill Show.)

Terrelle is sophomore who had a relatively bad night playing farkin' U$C.

How they (and some sycophant Buckeye "fans" on scUM forums) can make the comparison is totally beyond me.

And to add to that, I can't believe the media is actually mentioning Forcier and Heisman in the same sentence!!!

Rivals.com College Football - Forcier may be next freshman in Heisman debate

Has our society gotten that bad with instant gratification that we anoint the kid the next savior of a program after 2 games!?!? Man oh man, I can't wait to see the bandwagon jumpers when this kid has a bad game, because its bound to happen very soon!

Not to get this thread off topic, but I liked Spiels little rant about the D the other day (and there has been some brief talk about Offenses winning championships?). I wish I had the audio clip ? I love listening to Spiels on the radio or in the booth. The guy just has a passion that is unmatched by anyone with a microphone.

Anyway, he basically went on one of his passionate ?speeches? directed at our D simply saying that our offense scored enough points to win and that the defense ?controlled its own destiny and failed to win the game??

Point is? This wasn?t a loss by Pryor, by Tress, by the offense or the D? This was a team loss where a lot of things (some small some big) happened all over the place, not at any one area?

The line looks a lot better if Sanzo and Posey are able to make it into the endzone.. Not great but MUCH better.. we probably win the game if both do..

The line would have looked better if they would have been able to punch it in at the goal line. The line would have looked better if Herron could have had some holes to run through.
