Pro-style quarterback
Daytona Beach (FL)
Mainland

Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 206 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.98 seconds
Vertical leap: 25 inches
Shuttle time: 4.56 seconds
GPA: 4.3

Audibles: "Jonathan Garner has started three years. He’s the first quarterback to ever start for me as a freshman. He’s won 35 games and a state championship. He completed about 60 percent of his passes and threw only three interceptions all year long – none in the playoffs. He’s a big kid with a real accurate arm, and he makes good decisions. He’s got a 4.3 GPA. He’s just has a lot of things you look for in a great quarterback." -Mainland coach John Moronto

Biography:
Garner has been the driver for a great turnaround at Daytona Beach (FL) Mainland. Previously enjoying middling success, they have pushed deeper into the playoffs in each of his first three years as their quarterback. In 2002 as a sophomore he threw for 1600 yards and engineered a state semifinal finish. In 2003 as a junior he threw 1400 yards (13 TDs, 3 INTs) in an offense that showcased senior tailback Vince Wilson - together they won the Florida 5A state championship, the first ever for any school in Volusia County. Garner has a good arm, great field presence and leadership qualities that consistently make him a winner. The lefty was Honorable Mention All-State in Florida as a junior. Garner carries a 4.0 GPA and has scored a 1120 on the SAT.

Garner: "I drop back well and read the play as it goes. I'm a drop back, play action passer. I throw good intermediate routes and have a good three-step fade. My goal is to improve my 40 speed to 4.6 and I want to improve my arm strength. I'd like to throw the long ball better. I'm also working on reading defenses better."

according to the latest Insiders Premium tOSU and Miami are close to offering. He is a finalist for one of the remaining Elite 11 spots. He could be the top QB in Fla along with Nebraska signee Harrison Beck.

Rivals lists tOSU as a favorite

Haven't had a chance to watch the video yet but this quote from Jamie Newberg stood out.

Newberg on Garner - Insiders Premium

Garner is a very intelligent quarterback with good size. His arm strength has shown great improvement since his last snap of his junior season to the present time. Garner is an accurate passer that makes good decisions with the ball

I wonder if Coach Tressel would be interested in a QB with those qualities? :wink2:

His video is pretty good, but arm strength definitely is the question with this kid. He can air it out deep, but doesn't deliver the short to medium range passes with a lot of zing; in fact, he seems to prefer the "touch" pass, which he can throw very well. He sets up well in the pocket, runs nice play action, and can avoid pressure (although he doesn't appear to be a running threat). BTW, he's a lefty.

Of the QB's whom OSU is recruiting, he reminds me most of Bill Stull, but with slightly less arm strength and pocket presence; however, he is bigger than Stull, and for that reason alone, he may have more upside.

His arm strength has shown great improvement since his last snap of his junior season to the present time.
If true, then Garner could be showig some "upside" already.

Mainland is the ex high school of former OSU recruit, and recruiting blunder poster boy Buster Davis. Mainland has a quality program with a quality coach in John Moronto so kids who come out of the program are at least going to be coached well.

Correct. I don't know how much (if any) the Davis fiasco will affect the current Mainland players - the snafu can be attirbuted about 95% to Buster's own actions.

A bit off topic, but....

Buster Davis was a highly-rated MLB prospect from Mainland in the 2002 class (in which the Bucks signed LB's D'Andrea, Hawk, Carpenter, and Stan White - not too shabby). At any rate, Buster talked large about starring with D'Andrea, Carpenter, et al., making the OSU LB corps the best in the nation, etc. ad nauseum. Buster would routinely say that he was 99% certain that he would be a Buckeye, but he would never commit to Ohio State. All of the fans (and probably the coaching staff, too) figured that Buster would eventually commit, but it never happened. Come Signing Day, the Bucks had two scholarships available, and three players still "on the board" - Derek Morris, Richard Washington, and Buster Davis (remember, this was before Big Ten teams could "oversign"). Well, Washington had already committed to OSU, although he was wavering at the end; and Morris was simply such a good prospect that the Bucks just had to reserve a scholarship for him; so.... Buster was the odd man out - no verbal commitment, no scholarship on Signing Day. As it turned out, Morris did in fact sign with Ohio State (meaning that it was a good decision to hold a schollie for him), but Washington backed out of his commitment and signed with N.C. State. Of course, this left OSU with an "extra" scholarship, which was then available for Buster. However, Buster was gravely offended that OSU had the audacity to withhold a scholarship from him on Signing Day, and he immediately withdrew the Bucks from any further consideration (even though Ohio State had been his favorite team all along - go figure). Buster eventually signed with Florida State, where he now toils in relative anonymity.
