The weekend of the Texas game will be big for Ohio State in many ways, one of them being recruiting. Several players will be in attendance, and one of them will be Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater receiver Greg Mathews. Read on for an update.

With roots in Ohio, wide receiver Greg Mathews of Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater appears to be one of the players from the Sunshine State that Ohio State might have a chance signing at this season. Mathews plans to be in attendance to see Ohio State take on Texas.

"I have not set up any officials yet," he said. "I won't for awhile but I will be up for the Texas game."

In a recent article at PackPride.com, Mathews stated that Ohio State was not in his top four but was on his list of schools to visit.

"Right now my top four is Miami, Michigan, LSU and NC State," he said. "If I had to choose my official visits today, I’d visit Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Georgia and NC State.

Mathews told Bucknuts that family would play a role in his decision.

"I want to go somewhere where I can have some family," he said. "Some kind of support system. I have family in Michigan and in Tallahassee, but my mom is from Columbus and I still have family there."

Mathews talked to us earlier this month about what he planned to do with his decision.

"I will make my decision based on academics and coaches," he said. "My position coach will be very important to this. I plan on majoring in physical education."

"I was going to commit before the season, but now that is not going to happen," Mathews said. "I will likely commit during the season or right after."

Mathews has reported offers from, among others, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Miami (Fla.). All schools like him as a wide receiver.

"I am 6-4 195 and I will be playing corner this year and will return kicks in addition to playing receiver," he said. "Everyone is recruiting me as a receiver."

Mathews had 26 catches for 394 yards and four touchdowns in 2004. He starts his season this week.

"We are starting our season this Friday against Olympia. We play at the 6A level. That is the biggest division down here," he said.

Call me a skeptic, but I don't see this happening. The seats to this game are limited and I was under the impression only our prime recruits would be visiting, let alone a guy we have not offered. We are even using up seats for basketball recruits (some of the Thad 4) to try and land Raymar Morgan.

Texas game and recruits

There are MANY things to consider regarding a recruit and attendance of the Texas game. If a player wants to come as an unofficial there are seats set aside for recruits. If a player wants to use it as an "official" (assuming OSU wants to extend an official) it would be very difficult to make happen at this point. Not that it coudn't be done but there would be some significant hoops to go thru just with compliance. In addition, at this point, though the coaches are still working on recruiting. It is certainly not at the top of their priority list as they prepare for Miami and then of course Texas.

I think there is a chance he could get an offer. He isn't high up on our list but if we miss on a bunch of WR's he is a possiblity. He does have a few good offers so he can't be too bad.
