Two years ago it was Desmond Tardy (Purdue)who took home Mr. Football honors in the state of Indiana. Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central head coach Kevin Wright says Tardy was a special football player but he has an athlete this year that is better than Tardy. Dexter Taylor led Warren Central to a state championship in ’04 and now several colleges are interested in his services.

“Right now I don’t have any scholarship offers,” Dexter Taylor said.

“Most schools are recruiting me as an athlete. I could probably play quarterback, wide receiver or defensive back in college.

“My favorites are Purdue, Northern Illinois, Illinois, Ohio State, Toledo and Indiana. I really don’t have a leader, I’m just looking for (scholarship) offers.

“I camped at Illinois, Toledo, Cincinnati and Purdue. I don’t’ plan on attending any other camps this summer.”

As a junior, Taylor rushed for 1,400 yards and had 27 combined rushing, passing touchdowns. Dexter threw for 450 yards.

“Dexter is the best athlete in our school,” Coach Wright said. “He projects as a wide receiver or defensive back in college. My guess is that there are a lot of schools interested in Dexter but they won’t offer without seeing him play defense or wide receiver on film.

“Dexter is ahead of where Desmond Tardy was when both were going into their senior seasons. Dexter is physically faster and quicker than Tardy but he’s just not as tall.”

Dexter Taylor attended the Scout.com, All-American Combine, in Champaign, Ill., and he performed very well. Dexter worked out with the defensive backs and held his own against some pretty good competition.

Taylor will get a chance to show off his defensive skills in ’05 as Coach Wright says that Dexter will play on both side of the football for Warren Central.
