Penn State's Bell dismissed after being charged in new case
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --
Penn State wide receiver
Chris Bell, suspended in February for a previous off-field incident, was kicked off the team Tuesday after he was arrested for threatening a teammate during dinner.
"Chris Bell, who had been previously suspended from the team, is permanently removed from the team and will not be considered to be part of the team in the future," a Penn State spokesman said.
Police were called to Pollock Dining Commons at 6:28 p.m. Monday after receiving a report that someone had threatened another person with a knife.
Bell allegedly sought out Devon Still while holding a fixed-blade knife, according to The Centre Daily (Pa.) Times, which also reported that three assistant coaches restrained Bell and took away the knife.
According to police reports, Still said that as he was being led away by another coach, he heard Bell yell, "I have more knives and a gun up here," the Times reported.
Court documents show that Bell told police he had the knife because he was afraid for his safety, according to the Times.
Bell was arraigned Monday night on charges of making terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and harassment.
No injuries were reported.
After arraignment, Bell was sent to Centre County prison in lieu of $50,000 bail. A court employee says Bell did not have a lawyer at his arraignment.
The backup wideout was suspended from the team in February in connection with a fight last October involving several other Penn State football players.
Bell started the first two games of the 2007 season but overall saw little playing time, catching seven passes for 143 yards.
