WILSON, HUGHES CELEBRATE: Simeon two-way end Martez Wilson and Hubbard running back Robert Hughes were honored at their schools after being selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio in January.
Wilson and Hughes play in the Illini Prairie State Conference. Only 80 out of an estimated 1 million senior football players are invited. Public League administrators Calvin Davis and Mickey Pruitt plus Wolverines coach Jesse Chick were on hand for the festivities.
''This is a great honor for me, Simeon and the whole Public League,'' Wilson said. ''This is one of the highest honors I could earn.''
Simeon principal Tamara Sterling told an assembly of Simeon's seniors that she would treat them to a pizza lunch.
Hubbard's entire student body packed the gym for the Hughes announcement.
''This award is for the entire Hubbard family,'' Hughes said. ''Chris Patterson was selected my freshman year. I immediately made it one of my goals.''

For Simeon, a question is whether All-America end Martez Wilson is better suited for offense or defense in college. In the first half, Wilson caught four passes for 132 yards and one touchdown. He had seven tackles on defense.
Simeon coach Jesse Chick feels his future is on defense.
''I think Tez needs to be standing up, not in a three-point stance,'' he said.

This year's All-Public League team is led by Simeon wide receiver-defensive end Martez Wilson and Hubbard running back Robert Hughes, both from the Illini Prairie State Conference. Wilson and Hughes continue to show why the city not only has caught up to expectations, but has surpassed them as a talent pool in the state.
Both were chosen among 80 players from throughout the United States to play in the prestigious Army All-American game in San Antonio in January.
Wilson, a 6-4, 232-pounder, is ranked No. 15 nationally according to national talent scout Tom Lemming, and is the No. 1 defensive end.
''[Wilson is] outstanding on both sides of the ball,'' Lemming said. ''Wilson has size, speed and athleticism. As a pass rusher, he is the best in the nation. He is in the same class as Simeon Rice [Mount Carmel, Illinois and the Tampa Bay Bucs].''
As a two-way starter, Wilson is imposing on offense as well as defense. He led Simeon with 110 tackles, eight sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He also caught 25 passes for 779 yards and nine touchdowns.
He is joined on the All-Public League team by two of his Simeon teammates, offensive tackle Darrell Martin and cornerback Jack Ramsey.

Prairie Ridge holds on to oust Simeon

Simeon quarterback Jack Ramsey threw three touchdown passes, but Prairie Ridge running back Bryan Bradshaw's rushing touchdown propelled the Wolves to a 27-20 win in a Class 6A state playoff game Saturday in Crystal Lake.
Ramsey threw touchdown passes to Rashad Bonner and DeShaun Rodgers in the first half. But Prairie Ridge running back Joe Rategan had first-half touchdowns on runs of 21 yards and one yard.
Bradshaw gave the Wolves (8-2) the lead for good with a nine-yard touchdown run.
Ramsey (11-for-22, 207 yards) cut the Prairie Ridge lead to 27-20 with 3:23 left when he connected with Bonner for a 30-yard touchdown.
Simeon (6-4) got the ball on the Prairie Ridge 37-yard line with 19.2 seconds left, but four attempts at the end zone failed.
''This is the state playoffs, and you have to be mentally and physically prepared to play,'' Simeon coach Jesse Chick said. ''We made too many mental errors and mistakes that cost us this ballgame.''
Martez Wilson led Simeon's defense with 18 tackles and one sack.
