Anderson keeps momentum going with veteran club

Staring a startlingly un-Anderson-like 1-4 record down midway through last fall, the Redskins rallied to win their final five games. The burst extended the program's streak of seasons without a losing record to 16.
With 34 seniors on the roster, including 2005 FAVC Buckeye Co-Player of the Year Jake Davis, don't look for Anderson to need a similar late-season run to extend the streak to 17.
"We really finished with a lot of momentum, and I think that's where we picked up," head coach Vince Suriano said. "We had a tremendous offseason program."

Anderson was very close to being a playoff-caliber team last season, even before the five-game win streak. Of the four losses, one was by three to Oak Hills, one was by three to Lakota West and one was by one to Mason in overtime.
Now Suriano hopes an older, more veteran team can turn those close losses into wins.
"We tweaked a few things here and there, but we haven't changed a whole lot," Suriano said. ""So the kids are comfortable. I think they just kind of jumped in where they left off. There's no substitution for experience."
There's no substitution for a talent like Davis, either. He rushed for 1,249 yards and scored 26 touchdowns. And Suriano said he's only "stronger and faster" this year.
He'll run behind a giant offensive line, led by bookend tackles Mark Wetterer (6-foot-5, 300 pounds) and Joe Flading (6-foot-4, 265). Both are potential Division I college signees.
Senior Tony Capetillo, a transfer from Louisiana, also should be a strong contributor at guard. He played at Anderson as a freshman.
Gabe Correll moves to tight end this year, giving the team another big body up front.
Seniors Alex Barden and Jahan Olyaie are experienced receivers.
The biggest question mark on offense is at the quarterback position, where the Redskins must replace last year's 1,000-yard passer Brandon Taylor. Senior Kyle Giesting and sophomore Daniel Rod are the leading candidates.
Joe Lucking, one of the team's five captains, anchors the defensive line. Seniors Blake Raymond, Arthur Gildea and Joe Becker also return.
Nick Masci is the top returning linebacker.
The secondary, so important in Anderson's 3-3 odd stack defense, could be one of the team's greatest assets.
Blake Bruns and Tony Mathews are returning starters, as is Nick Weiss, an All-FAVC pick last year at free safety.
"Nicky Weiss is the guy back there," Suriano said. "He's very active. He's good versus the run. He's good versus the pass. He's just very good player."
The team's goals are ambitious but realistic --win the league, make the playoffs.
The FAVC Buckeye is especially tough this year with Glen Este, Mason and Winton Woods all expected to compete for playoff berths.
"I think it's pretty evenly matched," Suriano said. "But I think we've got as good a chance as anybody else."
