USC Positioned To Sweep Columbia Three
By Phil Kornblut

USC has stepped up its recruiting efforts of the junior class in South Carolina in an effort to turn the tide that has seen Clemson win the in-state battle the past couple of years. And the Gamecocks plan to protect their own backyard with three highly rated players residing at Richland Northeast and Spring Valley. RNE teammates DB Gary Gray and WR Mark Barnes and Spring Valley OL Quintin Richardson would like to attend the same school, though that's not an absolute priority. And all three hold USC very high up on their lists. And they are working to help USC with other prospects. Richardson talked to QB Jimmy Clausen of California and RB Brian Maddox of TL Hanna by phone the other night. Richardson and his grandfather plan to take an unofficial visit to USC the middle of next week. His grandfather will play a big role in his decision. Richardson has offers from USC, Clemson, Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State. Auburn and NC State also are close to offering.

Film of Mark in action.

My Take: A legitimate prospect on both sides of the ball. However, he is more impressive as a DB. He shows an excellent break on the ball, good change of direction, and is a solid tackler. He works well in space and shows good hands.

More Offers Coming For Barnes

By Phil Kornblut
WR Mark Barnes (6-3 190) of Richland Northeast said Sunday night he believes his is close to offers from Florida, Florida State and Miami based on what his coach is hearing from those schools. Barnes said he talked to Florida coach Urban Myer a couple of weeks ago. Barnes has offers from USC, Clemson, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Auburn, Maryland, Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Virginia, LSU, Boston College, Louisville and Alabama. Barnes said he went to a USC spring practice last week and is scheduled to go to Auburn this weekend. He's also considering attending the All American combine at Duke this Sunday. Barnes said he is "still wide open" but he felt that USC, Notre Dame, Louisville and Florida were showing him the strongest interest. He wants to take trips to Alabama, Louisville and Notre Dame and hopes to get to Notre Dame's spring game. Barnes said he and his teammate DB Gary Gray, Spring Valley OL Quintin Richardson, and California teammates QB Jimmy Clausen and RB Marc Tyler have all talked about going to the same school, but they are not yet in agreement on which school that is.

Interesting... Gray is set to announce tomorrow, and most feel that South Carolina will be his choice. I believe Clausen already knows where he's going, and it's not South Carolina. Tyler is believed to be a severe USC (west) lean. Also, some question whether Barnes can get into ND. So I wonder how set these plans really are...

Barnes Names A Top Three

By Phil Kornblut
Richland Northeast WR Mark Barnes (6-3 190) said Thursday night he has narrowed his list of schools to a final three...USC, Notre Dame and Louisville. And it's the Cardinals whom have come on strong. "I'm really loving how they just stepped up their and showed me that they appreciate what I can do and that I can be a big part of their team," Barnes said. "It's up to those three to beat each other out." Barnes indicated USC and Notre Dame were still the top two with him. Barnes said he wait until the middle or the end of the season to make an announcement "because I want to bring some scouts to our school."

USCarolina lock...the kids are trying to pull a 2007 version of the PSU class. The RNE boys are the ringleaders.

I'm thinking more like the Pitt class of 06. It started off with a bang if you remember where they named a school as their finalist that they had zero intention of heading to, in this case ND.
For anyone who doubts the influence of climate on recruiting, I will tell you for a fact that the temperature in South Bend killed ND's chances with Mark and Gary Gray.

Mark says ND and South Carolina are his leaders. He lists a series of schools he is interested in but no mention of tOSU.

I will not be updating this thread anymore. Mark is a part of the "Columbia Kids" who will all end up at South Carolina. It is a done deal but they are spacing their commitments for the attention.
