FAMU High's Watson draws interest
Junior receives offer from Buckeyes

FAMU High's Richard Watson is just one of several local athletes drawing the attention of various colleges.

Watson, a junior running back and linebacker, received an offer from Ohio State University on Thursday in addition to previous offers from FAMU, East Carolina, Kansas State, FIU and Western Illinois, according to his coaches.

?It is huge,? FAMU High head coach Ira Reynolds said. "To be a junior here in Tallahassee and be offered by the No. 1 team in the country, that's awesome."

Other programs, including Division I schools such as LSU, Florida and Florida State, have also shown interest in the running back. Watson finished last season with 1,300 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns, and recorded 75 tackles.

"Richard is excited," Reynolds said. "He's the kind of person that stays levelheaded, but he's certainly aware of what's being offered to him

FAMU strolls to victory

By Jamey Givens
DEMOCRAT CORRESPONDENT FAMU High cruised in its first-round playoff game Friday night, beating Cottondale 41-6 in the Region 1-1B quarterfinals and setting up a rematch with Graceville in next week's regional semifinal.
The Baby Rattler defense stifled Cottondale's rushing attack, holding the Hornets to only one non-penalty induced first down in the game, and only 3 total yards in the first half.
?That is pretty much the ballgame,? Cottondale coach Mike Melvin said. ?We just couldn't move the ball and they were so much bigger than us. We just couldn't do anything.?
FAMU High's (7-4) Tory Curry and Richard Watson each had two first-half rushing touchdowns, helping the Baby Rattlers jump out to a 27-0 halftime lead. Watson paced the Baby Rattlers with 102 yards on 15 carries. Curry sat out the second half with a sore ankle but already had 91 yards rushing seven carries.
Cottondale (6-4) had success stopping the Baby Rattler's inside rushing attack, but struggled to keep up with FAMU's quick tailbacks once they made it outside.
?We knew what they were going to do on offense,? Melvin said. ?It is just a matter of manning up and stopping then, but we couldn?t do it and they ran up and down the field on us.?
The FAMU defense also forced four turnovers. Senior Quentin Williams intercepted two passes, and the Baby Rattlers' defense also forced two key fumbles.
?Defensively we played well,? FAMU High coach Ira Reynolds said. ?We were very aggressive and stuck to our keys. We recognized
what they were going to do and played hard nose football.?
For Reynolds, Friday night's performance wasn't enough. The Baby Rattlers defeated Cottondale in the first round of the playoffs last
season, before losing to Graceville in the second round. Reynolds is determined to get his team over the hump, and past the Tigers next week.
?We have got to go back to work,? Reynolds. ?We have to be at practice Monday ready to work. We want to beat everybody, but we know that they are going to come over here ready to play.?

FAMU High (8-4): 1B State Semifinals
The Baby Rattlers face Warner Christian, under head coach and Tallahassee native Andy Price, a team unique in several ways. Its three losses were by a combined total of six points, but the Eagles did become the first 1B team to defeat a 6A program.

The Eagles are led by Naval Academy commit Caleb King, who's carried for 1,220 yards and 14 touchdowns and also snagged 148 tackles, 22 for losses.

However, the Baby Rattlers have junior running back Richard Watson, who continues to set school records whether by scoring the most touchdowns in a single season (30 and counting) or claiming the most rushing yards (1,828 and still going strong). With at least one more solid game this season, Watson stands to clear 4,000 career rushing yards.

Good defense wins ballgames, and FAMU High will once again look to sophomore Willie Ferrell, who set the single-season tackles record this year with 192 - 105 solos and 87 assists.
