Michigan men's '07 recruiting class impresses hoops analysts

Trio of guards can sign letters in November

Tommy Amaker departs for Australia on Tuesday for a 10-day trip with the Big Ten Foreign Tour team he's leading.

The University of Michigan basketball coach leaves behind a 2007 recruiting class that's impressed analysts after a July flurry when Amaker landed two of the country's top guards.

The three players in Michigan's class - East Grand Rapids point guard Kelvin Grady, Detroit Redford guard Manny Harris and Oak Hill (Va.) Academy guard Alex Legion - can't sign letters of intent until November. But their verbal commitments have attracted attention and given Michigan momentum in putting together the 2008 class.

"I'm not sure you could script it out a whole lot better than that,'' Scout.com recruiting analyst Dave Telep said. "Anytime you can make something like that happen, you'd have to say it's a pretty darned successful summer.''

Part of that came from the unexpected addition of Legion 21/2 weeks ago. The 6-foot-5-inch Legion, ranked among the top 40 players nationally in his class, like Harris, committed to Michigan in November, then reopened his recruitment in April.

"Rarely do you see a player decommit and come back to the school he was originally committed to. Just that in itself is sort of shocking,'' said Jerry Meyer, Rivals.com's national recruiting analyst.

"On a national scale, that was very surprising. I don't think anybody expected that one.''

Added Telep: "Probably one of the most difficult things to do in recruiting is to get a guy on the back end after he decommits. That's definitely the exception to the rule.''

The recommitment of Legion - who will transfer from Detroit Country Day to Oak Hill this fall - came a week after Harris said he'd play for Michigan. That helped change Legion's mind. The players know each other and their games compliment one another: Legion's jump shot and Harris' ability to get to the basket.

Meyer believes all of this could put the class among the top 25 in the country. And the big-name additions have helped Michigan's pursuit of 2008 talent.

There's Delvon Roe, a forward from Lakewood, Ohio, and Yancy Gates, a forward from Cincinnati. Both are ranked among the top 20 players in their class.

"They're in good with Roe. They're in a good position with him,'' Meyer said. "He's coming up big time as a prospect.''

Michigan has at least one, and possible two, scholarships to use for the class.

"(The commitments) freed up Tommy to spend a lot of time with some other kids,'' Telep said. "Is he able to do that if he doesn't have Legion and Harris? I don't know. From that perspective, it's very, very important.''

I believe if he takes time it helps OSU's chances. From what I've been able to tell we stand a close 2nd to UofM with Roe. If this goes into the season and the hype starts for our basketball team that can only help. Conversely, there will be discussions about Amaker's job security moving forward if he starts slow. The number of times OSU will be on national tv will be a huge recruiting edge.

I think if his decision goes until bball season we have a good shot, b/c we are going to have the hype and media surrounding our team as we should start off ranked fairly high and should be preseason favorites to win the big ten.

I think those things should help, but other than that I am not feeling too confident at the moment. I am just glad that we have Matta and I just hope that he can get the job done. This recruitment is about as big as Oden's was. Roe is not the one in ten year player like Oden, but he can have an impact and create the hype like Oden.

Hopefully we wow him on his visit.
