The University of Louisville's prime recruiting target - Tyreke Evans - is dominating the competition at the Nike Global Challenge in Portland.

Evans, whose team is playing late Monday, is averaging 34.5 points a game through two exhibition games. He's hit 27 of 52 from the field and is also averaging 8.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.0 steals a game.

Those are some lofty numbers that has the best of the best.

U of L commitment Samardo Samuels has scored 75 points in three games, while University Heights' Scotty Hopson has 33 in two games. Hopson and Evans were playing each other on Monday night in Portland.

The event features the top 40 players selected from the LeBron James U.S. Skills Academy earlier this month along with all-star teams from China, Puerto Rico and Canada.

The semifinals and championship game is slated for Tuesday.

best ball-handler at the elite 24 classic. he has all of the moves, especially a killer crossover. one-on-one, he cannot be stopped. expect a lot of clear-outs for him in college. excellent finisher. didn't see much of an outside game, though. solid, nba body. can be selfish with the ball. plays to the crowd.

Elite 24 Player Breakdown

slam online
Tyreke Evans, 6-5 combo guard, American Christian (PA), 2008: With Baron Davis coaching him, “Too Easy” proved worthy of his nickname, as he shook any defender willing to D him up for countless wide-open layups. Always stone-faced, Evans’ handle made knifing through the lane and getting to the bucket seem as easy as breathing oxygen.

Rose leaves, Evans steps in...

Top Pennsylvania prep player Tyreke Evans chooses Memphis over Villanova, Texas

ASTON, Pa. - One of the country's last undecided high-profile basketball recruits will spend next season at Memphis.

Tyreke Evans, the most valuable player of the McDonald's All-American game last month, announced his decision Wednesday at a news conference surrounded by his family at American Christian School.

"It was a tough decision, I wanted to stay close to home with my mom, my brothers and my family, but the school I chose was the University of Memphis," Evans said.

not nearly as impressive or explosive as I thought he'd e. I wasn't expecting him to dominate by any means, but he just looks like another player out there.

Only a freshmen, so obviously lots of time to improve, but TFIW.

I think any freshman going into John C's system is going to struggle their first few games if not halfway through the season.

That's the same thing I was thinking. He kind of looks like he's expecting to dominate like he did in high school, so he's half-assing. I don't know, maybe it was just one game, but I like Memphis, hopefully he can turn it on.

Well ya know its only been 2 games and the kid is already leading Memphis in scoring 19.0 and steals 3.5 and second in defensive rebounds at 4.0 a game. Even though he leads the team in turnovers as well 4.5 a game he also leads Memphis in assists 3.5. Rose didn't do that his first 2 games but then again two totally different players who's rolls for their teams are different so I won't even try to compare them. All in all so far so good for Mr.Evans.

True, but you also have to take into account that these are just tune up games. They aren't exactly playing top level talent. (Although, they won't necessarily be playing top level talent in conference play either.) I hope just for the kids psyche that he turns out to be at least half way decent.

I agree with you 100%. No argument from me.

Tyreke Evans has been named in a wrongful death suit, filed by family members of a 19-year old who was killed in a drive-by shooting in November, 2007.

Evans was allegedly driving the car, but testified for the prosecution in the trial of his cousin, who was convicted for the shooting and is now serving 9-20 years in prison.

He claims to have not known that his cousin had a gun until it was fired - but if somebody was a projected lottery pick, what would you expect him to say in that situation?

I'm amazed that none of this seemed to have come out while he spent his 1 year at Memphis (1 year after the shooting), or before last year's NBA Draft, where he was selected #4 overall by Sacramento.

Kings rookie Tyreke Evans linked to drive-by shooting lawsuit

Sacramento Kings rookie and emerging NBA star Tyreke Evans was among four defendants named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

The civil suit was filed by the family of Marcus Reason, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in November 2007 at the age of 19. Evan's cousin, Jamar Evans, pleaded guilty last January to third-degree murder and weapons charges in the case and was sentenced to between nine and 20 years in prison, the Sacramento Bee reports.

The King's rookie was allegedly driving the vehicle when the murder took place and testified for the prosecution during his cousin's hearing.

Evan's lawyer, Hayes Hunt, told the news source, "Tyreke Evans did nothing wrong…They've alleged he's somehow involved in this. Police didn't think he was, neither did prosecution. No one."

Police reports have said that Evans did not know his cousin had a gun until seeing him slip it into his sweatshirt after firing at Reason, reports the Bee.

Cont'd ...

In other news, it's a real shame that Memphis had its 64-game home conference winning streak (tied for Kentucky for the best all-time) broken by UTEP last night. Without Calipari and one of his rent-a-frosh like Rose or Evans, they're beatable.
