Petey gets downhill fast and with bad intentions...he is destructive hitter whether he is plugging his gap fit or making the tackle...he goes through you and the leg drive is natural. Good lateral movement and change of direction. Not much more room for growth on that frame...

One of the main things that FloridaFB.com has been able to do that nobody has been able to match is our ability to find players early, evaluate them from the beginning and follow their progress through their careers.

With our solid relationships with coaches across the state, we have the pleasure of getting information on athletes way before many ever hear about them. Here is one of those players who we've been in on for three years already.

Today, IN THE HUDDLE brings you the west coast as we showcase yet another underclassman we had in our Florida Football Magazine as one of the top players for the Class of 2009.

IN THE HUDDLE
has taken you to practice sessions in Miramar, pre-game workouts in South Walton County, and camps and combines from Winter Garden to the the Tampa area, where Smith and his teammates continue to have success with talent at every position.
THE SMITH REPORT

NAME:
Jamiel "Petey" Smith
SCHOOL:
Armwood
CITY
: Seffner
POSITION:
LB
HEIGHT:
6-0
WEIGHT:
235
40 TIME:
4.55 (Reported)
HEAD COACH:
Sean Callahan

SCOUTING SMITH:
From the first time we saw this talented athlete play, there was a sense of amazement how someone with this size could move so well. He is unstoppable, playing downhill on just about every play. He sheds blockers very well, has great hips, a tremendous base in which to work from and has tremendous vision, picking up plays early on like some of the great linebacking prospects.

As a run-stopper, he gets himself into position to become part of every play. Whether initiating the action for assisting after one of his tremendous teammates makes the stop, he has a knack to be around the ball.

He reminds many of former Pompano Beach Ely and University of Pittsburgh linebacker Clint Sessions, who is now playing with the Indianapolis Colts.

On passing downs, his knowledge, anticipation and ability to read the quarterback has made him such an elite football talent. This will be a player who will be among the nation's best during his senior season.

SMITH STATS:
Has been one of the elite football players the past two season for the Hawks. Was first spotted by FloridaFB.com as a freshman. Smith suffered a bladder infection back in September and underwent two abdominal surgeries, forcing him to miss nearly two months.

His brother, Eric, a senior for the Hawks, has been one of the best running backs in the state the past two years.

WHAT THE COLLEGE RECRUITERS ARE SAYING:
"Over the years I have watched so many quality football players in this state. In that time, I can honestly say that I haven't see a kid, at such a young age, who dominates the way this young man does."

HIS BAGS ARE PACKED:
While it's early in the recruiting process, programs such as LSU, Florida, Florida State, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, Miami and Ohio State are in the mix.

Petey discusses missing much of the season due to injury and says he would like to stay somewhat close to home, but tOSU is not too far for him. The Buckeyes were the first team to officially offer but he is also very high on Miami.

Obviously very early, but I think we are going to have a fight on our hands with Petey. It's always so tough to get kids to leave the state of Florida, but if any staff could do it it would be the OSU staff. They have had great success in grabbing some top guys out of Florida recently. Hopefully that trend continues.

Prep Report - Recruiting Updates Sports - from TBO.com Blogs

Standout linebacker Petey Smith and defensive lineman Ryne Giddins each have collected more offers than Callahan can count. The list of schools reads like a who?s who of college football programs - with the likes of Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and Tennessee all in the mix. But those aren?t the only juniors who are getting looks.

Callahan also noted there has been increased interest in quarterback Mywan Jackson, safety Angelo Hadley and linebacker Casey Callahan, the coach?s son. All are being looked at by various Division I programs, Callahan said.

From the Clemson site. Coaches from Clemson were in to see Smith today, who says he has offers from about everyone. He says that even though his brother is at Auburn, he will make his own decision.

Could Petey Smith follow Auburn pipeline?
Armwood junior Petey Smith stood in the background as his big brother, Eric, signed with Auburn on Wednesday.

Smith, one of the nation's top linebackers, wore a blue Auburn long-sleeved shirt and couldn't help but flash his trademark grin when asked if he's the next Smith brother bound for Auburn.

"It looks good right now," Smith said.

Smith said Auburn is in his top four, which includes Miami, Florida State and Ohio State. But Auburn has built a "personal relationship" with him and several other Hawks juniors; junior defensive back Angelo Hadley and defensive end Ryne Giddins promise to be two of the top recruits on next signing day.

Auburn hopes Petey Smith, prep teammates will follow brother's path to the Tigers

Auburn may have the inside track on one of the top linebackers in the country next year -- that is, if his brother puts in a good word.

Junior Petey Smith, ranked one of the top 16 junior linebackers in the country by Scout, has been offered a scholarship by Auburn. The Tigers would love for him to follow in his brother's footsteps, considering his brother, Eric, signed with Auburn this week.

``It's a possibility,'' Petey Smith told the Tampa Tribune.

Eric said he'd work on Petey for Auburn.

"Oh, I'm going to be talking to him," Eric said. "I know it's going to be his decision where he'll end up going, but I'd love it if he ended up at Auburn with me."

Eric told the St. Petersburg Times before signing day that ``I'm Auburn or Clemson. I think he's Miami or Florida State.'' Petey said he's considering Clemson, too.

"I'd say it's 40 percent (that we'll play for the same college)," Petey said a few weeks back.
