The kids a freshman in high school. I'm not saying he's bad, or doesnt deserve an offer, but not even starting on varsity yet? I dont know, but im not the one coaching a powerhouse program so we'll see.

They have gotten a look at him on the AAU circuit and he is the real deal. Remember that LN had Oden a few other upperclassman in the low post last year.

The summer camps and AAU Circuit are usually where a player first gets noticed. If he got offered by tOSU and Indiana already before starting a varsity game, he must be a stud. Mr. Conley also may have been able to give Thad some insight on this kid since he plays for Spiece Indy.

Mullens had an offer from OSU before he played his first high school basketball game, JV or varsity. He might as well had been a pre-frosh when he received that offer.

If Stephen wasn't good enough for an offer at this point in his basketball career, he wouldn't have one. I trust Matta's judgement on talent 100% and look forward to hearing more about this kid. I mean... can't go wrong with Lawrence North or the Indy Heat, regardless.

I just watched Countdown to Signing Day down here in Florida (a Southeastern recruiting news show) and Michael Conley was in studio for an interview. Why, you may ask, am I putting this is Stephen's thread? Well, because he said Matta began recruiting him in the 8th grade (for a different school of course, but he began to establish relationships)!! For those of you who are in teh area or can watch the show at all... Greg Oden will be on next week!!

It doesn't suprise me that Van Treese has an offer at this early stage, Matta has been recruiting him for a few years and is obviously very familiar with that area. Matta started recruiting Oden and Conley when they were in 8th grade also.

Van Treese gets offers

Stephen Van Treese, one of two big freshmen to come off the bench last year to back up Greg Oden at Lawrence North, is getting national attention. The 6-8 center was listed by one scouting service as one of the top five players at an invitation-only camp in San Diego for 150 players going into their freshmen or sophomore seasons.

Van Treese already has scholarship offers from Ohio State, where Oden is attending, Indiana University and Purdue.

"I think I've gotten a lot better because of Greg," said Van Treese, who was peppered with questions about practicing against Oden and compared to Carmel product Josh McRoberts, now at Duke.

"All they asked me about was Greg and Josh McRoberts and all that. It was all comparing me to Josh and asking about how it was to practice against Greg."
