Recruiting: Penn State snags WPIAL lineman
West Mifflin's Gress commits to Lions
Penn State has landed its 13th recruit for 2009, but the first from the WPIAL.
Adam Gress, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive lineman from West Mifflin High School, made a verbal commitment to Penn State yesterday.
His other top choice was West Virginia, and his other scholarship offers were from Michigan, Rutgers, Central Florida and Mid-American Conference schools.
Gress' stock with colleges has been on the rise in recent months because he has grown so much. He played last season at 240 pounds but has added 50 pounds since.
"It's really just from hitting the weights and trying to keep on a high-protein diet," said Gress, who also plays defensive end. "I had been working on this whole recruiting thing and trying to get my name out there. I figured I would have some looks and I figured I would have some offers from smaller colleges. I never saw myself going to Penn State. It's always been kind of like a dream."
Penn State offered Gress a scholarship two weeks ago after he attended a day of the Nittany Lions' summer football camp. Michigan also offered a scholarship after Gress attended its camp. He also attended Pitt's camp, but the Panthers did not offer a scholarship.
"This whole time, I've been looking for the perfect package," Gress said. "I've been looking for a good campus, great football tradition, good coaches, good people. Penn State has all of that."
Penn State also received a verbal commitment from Curtis Dukes, a 6-5, 235-pound running back from Indian River High School in Philadelphia, N.Y. He attended Penn State's recent senior camp and ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash.
With the additions of Gress and Dukes, Penn State now has 14 verbal commitments for 2009.
