1 and Done Discussion (split from Trae Golden thread)

Man, this '10 class looks like it might turn out to be one of the best recruiting classes in some time. Let's see how these guys mature. Congrats to Trae on all the hardwork he put in to get himself to the position to land a spot on a top division 1 school.

WOW...my only worry is how many of these players will be one and done like oden, conley, and cook???

One and done is also what helps Matta bring in these classes. They know that they're going to get to play right away because the previous class left for the NBA. Five star kids aren't going to want to sit in a logjam.

Really, what Matta is cashing in on are the kids who would have gone straight to the draft as high school seniors who now have to spend a year in college. He's shown that he can develop and promote them for that year, much as a prep school like Hargrave does. There will still be some three and four year guys who get in there, so I'm not worried about that much. The hype over the one-and-done, two-and-done kids just helps so much that it's worth it.

IMO, College Basketball and basketball in general would be so much more popular if there was a 3 year rule like college football has.

And it would help an ailing NBA. But the genie isn't going back in that bottle.

As for it hurting the program, I like continuity too. I like watching the kids develop and I look forward to them coming back each year. But if your entire roster is filled with true Frosh who could be playing in the NBA your team is going to do quite well.

In any case, three one and done Frosh is something we are not likely to see again no matter how well Matta recruits. In fact, has any other team had that happen?

We have some incoming players in future classes who may have the potential to be one and done, but we also have numerous kids who will be with the program for all 4 years......I am not overly concerned with losing players after just one year, it is the nature of major D1 basketball now. Every successful program has to do a balancing act and so far Thad has done a great job of projecting losses and filling them with future kids, the only exception being Conley, who caught the staff off guard.

Now back to Golden.
